Connor Byrne's NL Central comments

Post by mikechamp »

These comments came from a chat with MLB Trade Rumors' Connor Byrne that occurred on September 16. I added a question at the end about the trade deadline.

The link to the entire chat can be found here: https://www.jotcast.com/chat/mlbtr-live ... -6026.html

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Chances that Cubs sign Rendon? Castenellos? Make another move?

Connor Byrne
I don't see the Cubs signing Rendon. Castellanos would come way cheaper, and he has fared very well with Chicago, so that's a much more realistic idea.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Chances that the Cardinals sign Rendon and trade Carpenter?

Connor Byrne
I think Rendon will be too rich for the Cardinals' blood.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If the Cubs did, in fact entertain a trade for Kris Bryant, who could they realistically look to get back in a deal? Do Nate Pearson or Casey Mize even figure in an equation?

Connor Byrne
I don't think the Blue Jays/Tigers are close enough to contention to justify that type of move. Bryant's only got two years' control left.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Will the Reds keep Jose Iglesias and Freddy Galvis?

Connor Byrne
I'll say one of the two, but not both. They've already got a club option on Galvis, so he's the easy guess. Would like to see them aim higher, though - maybe on a guy like Gregorius.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Your QO guess - which of Odorizzi, Ozuna, Wheeler, Gibson?

Connor Byrne
I'll say Odorizzi, Ozuna and Wheeler.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Do Brewers still have the horses to take the division?

Connor Byrne
I doubt it. I give them credit for even being in wild-card contention at this point.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Will the Pirates trade Felipe Vazquez this offseason?

Connor Byrne
I believe they should, as I don't see them contending in the immediate future. Might as well cash in Vazquez when his value is sky high.

(I'm guessing this answer probably has changed, given Vazquez's legal troubles of the past 12 hours.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
(This Q&A stems from an earlier exchange where a chatter said: "The Orioles fan who is in MLB chats in mid September is the real MVP." and Byrne responded with: "Agreed. Tons of respect for O's fans who haven't checked out.")

Agreed and kudos to the O's fan - but have you seen the Pirates recently? I should at least be runner-up.

Connor Byrne
Pirates fans are up there, too, especially considering their lousy ownership.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Carp's career as a Card over with Edman on the verge?

Connor Byrne
Carpenter just got a pretty big extension, so probably not.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The AL/NL wild card games will involve which four teams?

Connor Byrne
This answer is very vanilla, but I don't see A's/Rays or Nats/Cubs changing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Who will be the first manager let go this offseason?

Connor Byrne
Off the top of my head, I think Mattingly will be out in Miami, and Maddon will probably be gone from Chicago whenever the Cubs' season ends (barring a championship). Hurdle should go in Pittsburgh. And we already know Bochy's retiring in SF, if that counts.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Who's your NL MVP pick?

Connor Byrne
It was Yelich. Probably Bellinger now.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If Maddon leaves the Cubs, who grabs him?

Connor Byrne
As with Girardi, a win-now team would make sense. However, Maddon will be 66 by next season, so maybe this is it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mookie for Hiura and Hader who says no?

Connor Byrne
Definitely the Brewers. They wouldn't trade Hiura alone for Betts, let alone him and Hader.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Will the Reds finally have a winning record next year?

Connor Byrne
For their fans' sake, I hope so, but I'm not betting on it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Now that we had some distance from the one trading deadline, do you think it was an overall positive for MLB as a whole?

Connor Byrne
I still don't like it. Either move the deadline to Aug. 10-15 or bring back the waiver deadline that runs through all of August.
