Nick Stavinoha
great player at LSU back in the day, does he have potential to play for the cardinals in the future? I'm a big tiger fan and was curious to how his skills are progressing...

Re: Nick Stavinoha
He's been called up a couple times to fill in for injured players but he's destined to be a career minor leaguer. Doesn't hit for enough power to justify a full time job given his lack of other skills on defense/taking walks/speed/etc.

He could be a 5th outfielder off the bench on a MLB team, but nothing much more than that.

Seems like the ultimate AAAA player from what I've seen. I could be wrong.

Considering the dearth of right-handed hitting outfielders beyond Matt Holliday, I can see him being a very cheap guy off of the bench for the next couple years if Joe Mather never recovers from his wrist injury.Magneto2.0 wrote:He could be a 5th outfielder off the bench on a MLB team, but nothing much more than that.

Joe Mather
David Freese (not an OF, but this is STL)
Random Rule 5 guy
others
Stavinoha won't be on the 40 man next year and probably not with the organization.
IMO, of course.

True, ICE, but the fact that Stavinoha has been at the majors before all of these guys will mean he's on the depth chart before them. Don't forget that. (not that you're incorrect, but that's how it works around there).

Re: Nick Stavinoha
I disagree on several points. I think he could become a solid bench player in the majors. While I doubt that he will ever be a defensive regular, he does have some skills:cardsfansince82 wrote:He's been called up a couple times to fill in for injured players but he's destined to be a career minor leaguer. Power is his No. 1 tool; if he can hit for average, he might be a regular DH in the AL; he would have to develop plate discipline for that to happen.
He could fill in at first base, and he is an emergency catcher.
Although he is slow, he is no butcher in the outfield.
In short, I think he will get the chance to be a full-time substitute and someone might take a flyer on him as a DH and substitute first baseman, corner outfielder and emergency catcher.
At worst, he should be a career AAA player who is called up when someone is injured. Career AAA players don't get no respect.
