Jim Callis Top 10 Cardinals prospects

Post by MrCrowesGarden »

Making a few assumptions, that we sign Miller and that Boggs and T. Greene lose their prospect status:

1. 3B Brett Wallace
2. RHP Shelby Miller
3. OF Daryl Jones
4. OF Wagner Mateo
5. RHP Jess Todd
6. RHP Clayton Mortensen
7. SS Pete Kozma
8. LHP Jaime Garcia
9. RHP Lance Lynn
10. RHP Adam Reifer

I'd probably put Descalso and Samuel in there over Lynn and Reifer.

I wouldnt rate Descalso that high quite yet. He needs to prove he can do it for more than just half a year.

It seems to be easier to get information about the head of MI6 on the internet than it is to get information about Garcia.

I don't think Samuel is really a prospect to be honest with you. He throws really hard with the fastball, but that is basically it, and his control is laughable. If he DOESN'T walk someone in an inning it's a minor miracle.

Reifer has been on a roll lately, has a better fastball, much better control, and a better secondary offering.

Descalso is basically Hoffpauir reincarnated, and Lance Lynn has an extremely high probability of reaching the majors. It's amazing that players like Lynn and Riefer are that low on our prospect listing. Shows just how far how our talent has come in short order. Lynn would have been our second or third best prospect just a few years ago.

I'm suprised that Bryan Anderson is disappearing so fast.

A great May. A bad June. Hits the DL and he's out of the top 10? (And a 23 year old A+ reliever is a top 10 guy?)

Hoff is a butcher at second, Descalso is at least average. I also think Descalso has a bit more pop. Hoff has the better batting eye though.

I'm more of a fan of Eduardo Sanchez now than I am of Fransisco Samuel. Sanchez throws just as hard with just as good of a slider, except he has much much better control. He's only 21, so he's basically the same age as Samuel (maybe a year younger - I don't feel like looking up Samuel's minor league page).

As long as Garcia's rehab progresses normally, he'll be ready to go come September, so he can probably jump to the AFL or play winter ball to get back in the groove of things. If he's ready to start the year, I'd put him at #5 and move Todd to #7 or #8. I'd also rank Mortensen higher than Todd as Morty has more value now, imo. Once they moved Todd to the pen, he became just another middle reliever. He had more trade value as a starter.

Honestly, it's because he was ranked too high. I'd say he profiles as Yadier Molina minus all the defensive value. Good average, but doesn't bring much else to the table.

Reifer's been delayed by injury since college, but has more upside than any reliever in our system's recent history.

An average defensive catcher who hits .275 with decent walk rates and modest power has a lot of value, probably as much value as an 850 OPS 1b, which is basically what should be expected from the #1 guy on this list. The rub is that with each passing year it's become less likely Anderson will become an average defensive catcher.
