As far as Cox, it just depends. If he's replacing Descalso or Punto or Carpenter, I imagine he could do just as well. If he's replacing Freese, you might as well leave him in the minors, because I doubt if he would be as productive as Freese.

If Descalso, Punto and Carpenter are the best options next year at 3B, I'll be really disappointed.

Just sounded like they were saying next year he'll get a call up - and it sounds like he can't really be worse than Skip right now (from what people more learned than myself are saying).

Cox I agree is more intersting, but being on the 40 man you ogtta think he'll break with the team next year and be up when rosters expand this fall?

I'd love it. If Cox and Wong are both performing well enough to warrant a call-up next year, it's going to be an exciting time for the team. I hope that's the case.

And I agree with you that it wouldn't take much to be an improvement over Schumaker.

I don't think he will. Remember, he didn't play at all last summer. They did that to keep his clock stopped for as long as possible. He'll spend the rest of the year in Springfield and a good portion of next year in Memphis.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves with Cox. He's not hitting lights out at Springfield right away. He's still a developing player that will probably take some time to adjust to the tougher arms of AA.


Edit: About the callup. He could get one if the SCards don't make the playoffs. They're 1.5 games out right now in a packed tight division (I think they're last) and they just got Cox and Miller. Look for them to make a push and have a playoff run. They'll keep Miller and Cox around for that. If Wong's lucky he could earn a promotion to play in Spfd for the playoffs. I think they did that with Wallace.

In each of the past three years, exactly one 2B was taken in the first round. In the three years before that, no 2B went in the first round.

Regarding positions and position shifts, Jeff Luhnow very explicitly said that for the Cards organization, Cox is a 3B. The question was asked because there’s been some thought that Cox will migrate to 2B, which might make Wong somewhat redundant. But Luhnow was adamant.

Wong’s coach, Mike Trapasso, has been at Hawaii since 2001, and before that his bio says he was at Georgia Tech for seven years. I don’t know if that means he coached on the ’94 team there; I’m assuming, frankly, that he did not. But either way, at Tech in the late ’90s, he saw some serious talent. And according to Trapasso, Wong is the second-best player he’s coached, behind Mark Teixeira.

I noted this in the story, but Jeff Luhnow sounded very confident this wouldn’t be a deadline deal. They think he wants to play ball and will get a deal done quickly.

A quote from Wong to that effect: “They were talking about signability, and that’s when I told them, I just want to get out there and play and start my career.”

Wong is by means a gold-glove type at 2B. I'm surprised to see that on him, but he'll stick at 2B without problem I believe.

Maybe I don't understand, but I thought being on the 40 man right now, his clock is ticking?

I don't mean to get ahead of myself like he's going to break next spring with the team and put up an 800+ OPS and field 3B well in the majors after 1 season in the minors. I suppose it'd be better for him to get daily AB's and work up to ML pitching than try and learn up here. But you gotta think (no matter what Luhnow says) if we have Skippy playing a terrible 2B and OPSing 570 and we are willing to throw Allen Craig at 2B, if Cox could sniff 700 OPS and his arb clock is already ticking, I'd let him break ST with the team, split some time with DD at 2B, fill in at 3B from time to time.

Almost certainly not. Cox could only pull that off because he was a draft eligible sophomore who could have gone back to Arkansas for his junior year.
