Ottavino wasn't that great even in the second half. His MLE after the break was something like a 5.50 FIP.

I don't expect great things from Ottavino, but it would seem that an org with a dearth of pitching prospects and room on its 40-man that even Ottavino would be worth protecting.

Yep. Ottavino does have a big arm, worth protecting IMO. Another name that should be on the drop list is Shane Robinson. I don't know why the [expletive] he was ever on the 40 man to begin with.

Excellent point.

He was put on the roster because we needed a right-handed hitting outfielder who could play CF, and at the time both JoeyBombs and Craig were laying big stinky eggs.

The scraptastic Sugar Shane was the best we had.

Honestly, if we hadn't non-tendered Aaron Miles, we could have just stuck him in CF to avoid wasting the roster spot on Robinson. That would have been a much better option.

How many years in our system before a player becomes Rule V eligible? And is "length of service" the only factor?

HS players have five years after they were drafted, college players have four. So this year, HS players drafted in 2005 (Anderson, Jones, etc.) and college players drafted in 2006 (Ottavino, Jay, etc.) need to be added or they will be Rule V eligible.

The Cardinals added 8 players to the 40 man today.
Link

Quote:
Outfielders Allen Craig, Jon Jay and Daryl Jones were added along with catcher Bryan Anderson, first baseman Mark Hamilton, starting pitcher Adam Ottavino and relievers Francisco Samuel and St. Louis native Tyler Norrick. The additions leave the Cardinals with 34 players on the major-league roster, leaving six vacancies to allow for further moves before next month’s draft.

I didn't realize we pulled that many guys off the 40 man.

No worries guys. If Z gives us a bad start, we still have Randy Wells, Tom Gorzelanny and Carlos Silva ready to go later in the week. That's the beauty of having a rotation that goes 5 deep.
