Quote:
1) Shelby Miller, RHP, Grade B: I love the ceiling, but we need to see how he adapts to pro ball, if he can stay healthy, etc. etc.

2) Jaime Garcia, LHP, Grade B-; I like him and the Tommy John recovery looks like it went well, but I hope they let him build up his stamina rather than pushing him too quickly.

3) Lance Lynn, RHP, Grade B-: Projects as an inning-eater number three starter type. K/BB in the Texas League wasn't great, could use some Triple-A time.

4) Robert Stock, C, Grade B-: I preferred him as a pitcher in college, but letting him hit makes sense: if he makes it, you have a power-hitting catcher with good defense. If he doesn't hit, you just move him back to the mound. Could be one of the best catching prospects in the game by July.

5) Daryl Jones, OF, Grade B-: I keep expecting power to develop but there's no sign of it. Cutting him some slack on '09 numbers due to injuries.

6) Eduardo Sanchez, RHP, Grade B-: Underrated power arm needs more attention, could be a major league closer if command sharpens a bit more.

7) Allen Craig, OF, Grade B-: I really like the bat, just needs to play.

8) David Freese, 3B, Grade C+: Almost a B-, injury was badly timed, turns 27 in April, looks like a .270 hitter with 20 homer power, solid glove.

9) Jon Jay, OF, Grade C+: I just like the guy. Always seems to rip the ball when I see him. I'd love to have him as a fourth outfielder.

10) Joe Kelly, RHP, Grade C+: Nasty power sinking stuff, college results didn't match arm, this could/should change in pro ball but he was erratic in the NY-P, too, so maybe it won't.

11) Dan Descalso, 2B, Grade C+: He was great in the Texas League but went back to being mediocre after promotion.

12) Tyler Henley, OF, Grade C+. Similar to Jay....perhaps a bit more pop but a bit less speed, another guy who could be very good as a fourth outfielder.

13) Blake Hawksworth, RHP, Grade C: Deserves credit fighting back from injury. Can be a nice middle reliever.

14) Tyler Greene, SS, Grade C: Lots of speed, some power, good tools, still held back by spotty plate discipline. Could hit .280 with 20 homers some year, then .180 the next year.

15) Steven Hill, C-1B, Grade C: Remember Todd Greene? The short guy with tons of power who could play outfield, first base, catch a bit, but who couldn't draw walks? This is his clone.

16) Pete Kozma, SS, Grade C: If he'd gone to Wichita State, this would be his junior season. Too young to write off just yet.

17) Francisco Samuel, RHP, Grade C: Blistering stuff, with no idea where it's going.

18) Scott Bittle, RHP, Grade C: He could move through the system very quickly, if his arm doesn't disintegrate like the crew of the USS Exeter after being exposed to the Omega IV biological weapon virus.

19) Mark Hamilton, 1B, Grade C: Remember him? Looked like an injury-plagued bust but rebounded this year, got a place on the 40-man. Don't see how he fits in the lineup other than as trade bait.

20) Tyler Norrick, LHP, Grade C: Another 40-man roster addition, power lefty arm with a high strikeout rate.

I agree with the rankings for the most part, although I would rank Descalso higher (probably around the Craig/Freese area. I'm a firm believer that he hit a wall in AAA because he went from being an everyday player in AA to a bench utility player in AAA getting 5-6 ABs per week - he shouldn't have been used all over the diamond to spell Hoffpauir, Solano, Barden, Greene, etc. He should have been the primary 2B. Hoffpauir obviously had no future in the organization as a 2B - his only usefulness to the team would be as a no-hit no-field utility middle infielder (but he has good K:BB ratios!) - as evidenced by the fact that he's no longer on the team. I'd look to see Descalso's AAA numbers vastly improve this year with regular playing time. If he's still losing playing time to the likes of Donovan Solano and such, I will be pissed.

I'm glad to see Stock and Kelly ranked relatively highly. I'm very high on both of them. The one nice thing about our draft this year, despite being VERY college heavy overall, is that at one point or another over the past year or two all of our first five picks were considered first round talents.

I'm also really excited to see Bittle play and witness the destruction that his cutter can create based on his Nintendo college numbers. I'm also excited to see Hector Hernandez and Quicksilver Jr. get to play this year. Hopefully Jackson can work on his hitting at QC and improve a little bit to replace Ryan in a couple years as our no-hit all-glove league minimum Adam Everett.

Not a whole lot to add, but from what I hear, if Stock's bat comes alive he's something special. Word is he's a super athletic and a really good defensive catcher. I don't chime in a whole lot in the minor league threads because I'm afraid to sound super biased ( I get to see a lot of Springfield players ) but the scouts talked him up more than Miller. The scouts I heard from absolutely love his swing but hate his approach/contact skills (or lack thereof). And their opinions of his pitching weren't glowing. Not bad though, just kind of ho-hum. I think they were showing a bias though, because I didn't hear anything bad about his stuff. Good fastball+hard slider+good change apparently. Seemed like they were just hoping for a good defensive catcher who can rake instead of a relief pitcher.

Maybe I don't really understand how they come to decisions about league-wide minor league rankings, but when looking at that list, the only reason I can figure they dropped us at 29 is because we don't have a prospect with an "A" grade. I doubt we should be in the top ten there, maybe not even the top half, but I expect more than half of those prospects to at least contribute at the Major League level.

No worries guys. If Z gives us a bad start, we still have Randy Wells, Tom Gorzelanny and Carlos Silva ready to go later in the week. That's the beauty of having a rotation that goes 5 deep.

I like how he gives Freese a C+ and then describes him as a borderline All-Star.

As for Descalso, he got 171 PAs in two months in Memphis. He was a full-time player getting a night off once in a while. Anyway, how do you explain his .682 Batavia OPS in '07 followed by a .681 in Palm Beach in '08? The guy showed a flash of some offensive ability last season, but the preponderence of evidence is against him.

I watched Descalso during his breakout year, and never liked his tools. It's hard to say you don't really like someone when they're mashing, but that's kind of how I was with him. *That's not to say I'm a scout or anything, I loved Chris Perez because of his stuff, but overlooked the fact that hitters wouldn't chase the slider 6" off the plate in the bigs nearly as much, and his fastball wasn't as special when a hitter is sitting on it. I also loved Jones, and he still hasn't developed the power I expected.

Interesting...thanks for the info. Stock is kind of another right hander if he's pitching. Nothing special about his stuff, but all pretty good. A normal prospect as a pitcher...a chance to be special due to his tools as a catcher. As you know, a good hitting catcher with the athleticism to play defense well is really tough to find.
