Cards release 6 minor leaguers

Post by Swirls »

JUPITER, Fla. -- The St. Louis Cardinals cut six players from their minor-league camp, including a Class AA shortstop, a Class AA outfielder, and a player who had developed a following on Twitter for his energetic reports from the Cardinals' farm system.

This morning the Cardinals trimmed outfielder Antonio DeJesus, who topped out at Double-A Springfield last season; shortstop Jose Martinez, who also reached Springfield in his career; outfielder CJ Beatty, known around here as The Twitter Hitter; and RHP Nick McCully, INF Devin Goodwin and RHP Charllan Jimenez.

A tidbit on each:

DeJesus, a 2007 pick out Kentucky, hit .206/.336/.339 in 189 at-bats for Springfield. He homered twice and was 8-for-8 in steals.

Martinez, an international signing out of Venezuela, missed all of 2009 after establishing a foothold in Springfield as an everyday infielder. In 2008, he hit .253/.292/.348. But in 2010, he was limited to GCL games, appearing in only six.

Beatty, who goes on Twitter by the handle @CJBeatty44, reached High-A Palm Beach in 2010. He hit .245/.327/.429. The Cardinals took him in the 26th round of the 2009 draft, coming out of North Carolina A&T.

McCully, a 2009 draft pick out of Coastal Carolina University, threw a perfect game in the Cape Cod League as a college kid. With the Cardinals he debuted in Quad Cities then spent 2010 in short-season Batavia's rotation, where he went 4-2, 4.19 with 44 Ks and 17 walks in 68 2/3 innings.

Goodwin, a 2009 pick out of Delta State University, reached Quad Cities last season and hit .272/.370/.431 there. He had seven homers in 239 at-bats with 38 walks and 39 strikeouts at the level.

Jimenez, a free agent signee out of the Dominican, went 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA in 11 games (five starts) for the rookie-level Johnson City club. He had 25 strikeouts and six walks in 33 1/3 innings. Back in 2009, Jimenez buoyed his place in the system with a 6-0, 2.14 turn through the GCL. That season he led the system in ERA.

Will be back in this entry shortly with the stats from Wednesday's camp day. Just coding up the numbers now.
