International Signings

Post by phins »

The Cardinals have had much more success in recent years with their Latin America and International camps for signing players once they reach 16 years of age.

This year, they've signed Dominican SS Hector Linares. He's 16 and 6', 160. Said to have good bat speed and an inside-out swing (read: no power). Good frame for a 16 year old kid.

The high profile signing is #28 overall rated player OF Carlos Talavara. He's a 16 y/o CF prospect who's 6', 160 who has hit in competitive game settings and has a nice overall skill set. He's known as a good at everything, but lacking true tools type. He's a decent athlete and the Cardinals scouts are higher on him than most teams.

Keep in mind he's a 16 y/o kid and the Cards have seen him a ton, so they probably have a bunch of information on him. Keep these kids and Alcantara in mind and check back in several years.

begs the question...what was the consensus on Taveras when we signed him?

The consensus on Tavares was extremely low. Scouts didn't like his swing (if you've ever seen it, you understand why, now imagine that refined swing at 16 years old).

Tavares signed for under $100,000 at a time there was no cap or restrictions on spending. Add to that, his handler takes anywhere from 25-50% and then whatever taxes he's expected to pay on the money and it's safe to say Tavares put less than 50k in his pocket to sign with the Cardinals.

The Mitchell Boggs trade just raised our international cap by $206k, which is roughly a 10% increase.
