Re: Minors 2016
Gomber dominant again tonight in Palm Beach. Considering his age and the excellent season he had in the MWL last year the FSL seemed unnecessary this year. I never expected him to spend this much time there doing so well. Oh well. Maybe they will push him quick next seasons.

Re: Minors 2016
I went to the Peoria Chiefs playoff game tonight at Clinton, IA. They lost 4-0. Jake Woodford started and did pretty well. He actually looked overpowering in the first inning as the hitters weren't able to catch up. But the Lumberkings started taking good at bats and getting deeper into counts. They got 6 singles off of him and 2 walks in 5 IP. So he was pitching from the stretch a lot. I would say he bent but didn't break, allowing only 2 runs. In all, the Chiefs allowed 13 hits, all singles. So the score could have been a lot worse. On offense the Chiefs were held to just 3 hits and 2 walks and were K'd 12 times. Magneuris Sierra had a rough night, going 0 for 4 with 4 K's. Brian O'Keefe also looked lost at the plate. He went 0 for 3 with a walk and 3 K's.
The Lumberkings are a Mariners affiliate and they had 19 shutouts as a team this year, and one combined no-hitter. They can really pitch. The Mariners had the 28th ranked farm system coming into this season but somehow all 7 of their minor league affiliates made their league playoffs. There has to be something decent in there somewhere.
It doesn't get any easier for the Chiefs tomorrow. They haven't announced their starting pitcher yet but the Lumberkings are sending Luiz Gohara to the mound. He's a 6'3" lefty from Brazil. He put up a 1.82 ERA in 70 IP this year.

The Chiefs were down 4-0 but O'Keefe and Chinea hit back to back HRs in the bottom of the 7th to make it a 1 run game. They trail 4-3 in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Re: Minors 2016
I was at the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins) @ Clinton Lumberkings (Mariners) playoff game tonight. Winner would advance to the Midwest League finals. The score was 0-0 all the way to the bottom of the 11th. Ricky Eusebio got a hit with 2 outs in the bottom of the 11th to win the game. The two teams combined to go 1 for 16 with RISP. These two teams can pitch.
The starting pitcher for the Lumberkings was 19 year old Nick Neidert. He's the Mariners #4 prospect. He impressed the crap out of me. He went 7+ IP, and had 9 K's, 0 walks and allowed 3 hits. The Lumberkings SS Rayder Ascanio made a couple jaw dropping plays. The most impressive one was diving play with a runner on 3rd and no one out. Infield drawn in, he dove and caught it, got up and looked the runner back before throwing the batter out at fist. He made another outstanding diving play in the top of the 10th, on a blooper hit into shallow left center that I was sure was going to be a bloop single. Alex Jackson (Mariners #6 prospect) played RF and crushed 3 balls. One was right at the CF and the other two were doubles.
The Kernels SP was Sean Poppen, who just graduated from Harvard this past spring. You don't see many Harvard graduates in the low minors. He went deep into a lot of counts and so he was only able to go 5 innings, but he wasn't hit hard. Other than 1 error and a couple wild pitches it was just a well played game. The Lumberkings will either play West Michigan (Tigers) or Great Lakes (Dodgers) in the finals. Those two teams play their game 3 tomorrow night.
