Breyvic Valera???

Post by IlliniRedbird »

Any chance we see Breyvic Valera as a September call up. Kid has been tearing it up in triple A all summer. I was reading about the Cardinals top 30 minor league prospects and couldn't believe he wasnt on there. Wong may be headed to the outfield with Holliday likely gone after this year and Moss while a pleasant surprise in RF is still a better fit as a 1B. Love Adam's but he needs to be in the AL as a DH to avoid the injury bug and he might be a good bargaining chip for an off season trade. Just a lil food for thought.

I highly doubt it. He was godawful for the first half of the season while repeating AA. He's been very hot since getting promoted to AAA, but it comes with an unsustainable .400 BABIP. He has zero power whatsoever (six HR total in his seventh professional season, three of which came last year in the hitter's paradise of AA Springfield). He doesn't appear to have much speed either, so unless he is Ozzie Smith with the glove and can play all over the diamond, I see no reason why he would get called up for infield depth.

Once Diaz (hopefully) comes back later this year, we should be okay. Although another OF would be helpful so that Moss can go back to 1B every day (or acquire an everyday 1B with Adams on the DL).

His uninterestingness is interesting. He doesn't strike out and walks a good amount. When he makes contact, which is often, he powers the ball just over the infield for a sigle. He's a zero power, BABIP dependent hitter. He looks prospect worthy when it's sky high, looks atrocious when low and settles in as a meh guy when normalizes. Last year and beginning of this year looked like he maxed out as AA had eaten him up. He was even left unprotected in Rule 5 draft. He has played some SS, 3B and LF but is pretty much just a 2B.

Hard to see him being anything useful in majors. His high walk rate would plummet as pitchers realize the most damage he can do is a single. He does put the bat on the ball at a high rate and has some versatility, so he could see time on a bench. Might even have a short career as a utility guy on a lesser team.

He's a poor man's utility player. MLB pitchers will evaporate the walks and then he's an entirely batting average dependent player with zero power or speed.

The fact he's made it to AAA has already made him a success, but he has no future with the Cardinals outside of a possible AAAA type role.

Surprise addition to 40 man? Especially in a numbers crunch time where we lost Kiekhefer and Hazelbaker.

He took an unexpected step forward this year. I still think he's a batting average dependent player who is a utility guy.
