Memphis

Sosa Wins it for Redbirds in 10th
Edmundo Sosa hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to propel the Memphis Redbirds (9-8) to a 5-3 win over the Round Rock Express (Astros) Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

With the game tied at 3 heading into the top of the 10th, Jesus Cruz entered with the runner placed on second base as part of Minor League Baseball's extra-innings rules. He promptly got a pop-out and a strikeout, and then he took a comebacker off his back but kept his composure for a put-out to end the inning.

Max Schrock was placed on second to start Memphis' 10th inning, and he was bunted over by Ramon Urias before Sosa launched the game-winning home run to left field to cue the celebration.

Jake Woodford was outstanding in a start for Memphis, working 7.0 innings and giving up just one run on three hits with four strikeouts. He lowered his season ERA to 1.16 over four starts.

Facing many of the same Astros prospects he faced in last season's Pacific Coast League championship-clinching win at AutoZone Park on September 15, Woodford again had their number after 7.1 three-hit, shutout innings last season. In two starts at AutoZone Park against the Triple-A Astros, Woodford is 2-0 and has a 0.64 ERA with just one run and six hits allowed in 14.1 innings.

Sosa started the scoring for Memphis with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. The game was tied at 1 until the bottom of the sixth, when Adolis Garcia hit a sacrifice fly ahead of Andrew Knizner sneaking an RBI knock up the middle. The Express tied the game in the eighth with two runs off Chris Ellis.

Leandro Cedeno doubled to plate Gorman to make the score 5-0. Donovan singled after Cedeno to score Whalen from second to increase Peoria's lead 6-0. With runners at the corners, Herrera hit a sac fly to deep center field to score Cedeno and give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead.

That gave way to Edman's base knock to center field to give the Redbirds the lead, and John Nogowski gave Memphis some breathing room with a bases-loaded walk.

With a 6-4 advantage, Hunter Cervenka returned to the mound in the bottom of the ninth after pitching the eighth and got two groundouts and a strikeout to end the ballgame.

Drew Robinson also had three hits for Memphis, and Ramon Urias went 2-for-4.

After Memphis scored in the top of the first, Omaha (9-11) scored the game's next three runs on a wild pitch, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk. That chased Alex Reyes from the game, and John Fasola followed in relief and gave up a run with three walks in 2.1 innings.

Chasen Shreve tossed scoreless sixth and seventh innings, with the Redbirds getting within 4-2 in the sixth on Edman's second home run of the season.

Neither team scored in the seventh and eighth, setting up Memphis' four-run ninth to snag the ballgame.

The Redbirds' defense turned three double plays in the game.

Shew tosses 6.0 shutout innings in Cardinals win over Sod Poodles
Anthony Shew tossed 6.0 shutout innings Thursday night at Hammons Field, setting up the Springfield Cardinals (7-14) with their first shutout win of the season in an 8-0 final in the series finale against the Amarillo Sod Poodles (9-12).

DECISIONS:
W: RHP Anthony Shew (1-2)
L: RHP Emmanuel Ramirez (1-2)

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
- Springfield chased Ramirez after just 0.2 innings pitched, scoring four quick runs off the Sod Poodles starter. The first crossed on an Elehuris Montero bases-loaded walk, and then a bases-clearing double by Jose Godoy gave Shew and the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.

- Rehabbing St. Louis Cardinals OF Tyler O'Neill hit his first home run as a Springfield Cardinal in the fifth inning, pushing the Cardinals lead to 5-0.

NOTABLES:
- Despite already posting three starts with one earned run allowed, Shew put on his best performance of 2019 on Thursday, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out a season-high seven over his 6.0 shutout innings. The start dropped his ERA to 1.93, and tonight marked his fifth consecutive start walking two batters or less.

- Chris Chinea tripled for the first time since July 16, 2015 with Johnson City (Rookie). His three-bagger scored Irving Lopez and gave the Cardinals a 6-0 lead in the seventh.

- Conner Capel hit his second home run of the season and first since April 14 vs. Northwest Arkansas with a two-run blast in the seventh that cemented the 8-0 final.

- Cardinals relievers RHP Roel Ramirez (2.0 IP) and RHP Kodi Whitley (1.0 IP) tossed 3.0 shutout innings to close out the game.

Memphis

Memphis' Late-Inning Magic Continues in 7-3 Victory
A day after scoring four runs in the top of the ninth en route to a 6-4 win, the Memphis Redbirds (12-9) scored all seven of their runs in the final four innings and captured a 7-3 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals) Friday night in Omaha, Nebraska.

Memphis has won eight of its last 10 games.

Austin Gomber got the win after 6.0 innings of work allowing just two unearned runs. He struck out eight and walked four, and the Storm Chasers (9-12) had just three hits. He is 3-0 on the season.

Two big Memphis home runs provided five runs in the later innings, as Rangel Ravelo's three-run shot in the top of the seventh gave the Redbirds a 4-2 lead, and Adolis Garcia's sixth longball of the year in the eighth made it 6-3 in favor of Memphis.

Seven Redbirds had a hit in the game, and Edmundo Sosa, Drew Robinson, and Max Schrock had two-hit games for the Redbirds.

Omaha scored two runs in the bottom of the third coming off an error, and the 2-0 lead remained until Memphis got on the board in the top of the sixth when John Nogowski launched a sacrifice fly that scored Robinson, who reached on an error.

Gomber finished his outing with a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth inning, and Memphis took a lead it would not relinquish in the top of the seventh after Ravelo launched his second home run of the season.

Omaha came within a run at 4-3 after a tally in the bottom of the seventh, but Garcia provided some breathing room with a two-run shot in the top of the eighth to move the score to 6-3. The Storm Chasers loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom-half of the inning, but Jesus Cruz struck out the side to keep the three-run Memphis lead.

The Redbirds added a seventh run in the top of the ninth, before Chris Beck tossed a scoreless ninth to finish the ballgame.

Schrock also had his third stolen base of the year in the game.

Cardinals rally in 8th for 3-2 win over 1st-place RoughRiders
Back-to-back RBI doubles from Kramer Robertson and Dylan Carlson sent the Springfield Cardinals (8-14) past the Texas League South Division leading Frisco RoughRiders (13-9) 3-2 on Friday in front of 4,236 fans at Hammons Field.

DECISIONS:
W: LHP Jacob Patterson (3-1)
L: RHP Blake Bass (1-1)
S: RHP Connor Jones (1)

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
- After Frisco took a 2-1 lead in the top half of the eighth, Springfield immediately responded in the bottom half. DH Shane Billings started the inning with a single. Two batters later, Robertson ripped a one-out double to left and advanced to third on the throw home, scoring Billings. Next, Carlson blasted another double to the wall in left that easily brought Robertson home for the winning run.

- After Cardinals RHP Merandy Gonzalez allowed a home run, a walk and a single in the first four batters of the eighth inning, Patterson came in and quickly induced an inning-ending double play to keep Springfield within a run.

- The response of Cardinals starter Williams Perez was perhaps the game's biggest story. The right-hander allowed a leadoff home run to Christian Lopes before going on to pitch 7.0 full innings, allowing just that one run on four hits and three walks while striking out seven.

NOTABLES:
- Combined with Cardinals RHP Anthony Shew's 6.0 shutout innings on Thursday vs. the Sod Poodles, Cardinals starters have allowed just one run over their past 13.0 innings.

- Patterson has now gone three straight appearances without allowing a baserunner. He leads all Cardinals pitchers with three wins.

- Cardinals 1B Chris Chinea tied the game 1-1 with a solo home run in the fifth. It was Chinea's third homer of the season and first since April 17.
