Things looking bad in Memphis

Edmundo Sosa homered in the bottom of the third inning, but that was all of the Memphis Redbirds' offense in an 8-1 loss to the Oklahoma City Dodgers (Dodgers) Saturday night at AutoZone Park.

Sosa has homered in back-to-back games. He also singled in his next at-bat to finish 2-for-3. Three other Redbirds had a hit in the game.

Daniel Ponce de Leon started and allowed six runs on four hits in 6.0 innings. He walked three and struck out five. Chris Ellis followed and struck out five in 2.0 innings, but he allowed two runs. Chasen Shreve fired a scoreless ninth for the Redbirds (23-34).

Cardinals fall to Naturals in front of second straight sellout crowd
The Springfield Cardinals (22-33) fell 12-5 to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (23-31) on Saturday night in front of a season-high sellout crowd of 7,490 at Hammons Field.

DECISIONS:
W: RHP Brady Singer (1-0)
L: RHP Johan Oviedo (1-2)

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
- The Naturals poured four runs on the Cardinals in the first inning before the sellout crowd could really settle into their seats. The three-run third came courtesey of home runs by 2B Gabriel Cancel and LF Kort Peterson.

- CF Dylan Carlson smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to pull the Cardinals back within three, but following a 48-minute rain delay in the top of the eighth, the Naturals pulled away with three runs in the eighth and a 12th in the ninth.

NOTABLES:
- Carlson (2-for-3) doubled, homered, drove in a run and scored three runs out of the leadoff spot. He has five multi-hit games in his last eight starts.

Chiefs Win Second Straight
Thanks to a strong start from Alvaro Seijas, the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-2 Saturday night. The Chiefs improve to 24-30 on the season with the series finale set for Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

After a scoreless five innings on both sides, the Chiefs broke through in the sixth against Wisconsin starter Aaron Ashby. With two outs in the inning Ivan Herrera doubled to left field, and scored on a bloop single from Brady Whalen to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the seventh inning as Malcom Nunez was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Josh Shaw singled to center and an error by Jesus Lujano allowed Nunez to score while Shaw ended up at third. A sac fly from Jhon Torres gave the Chiefs a 3-0 lead on an unearned run.

Seijas was fantastic all game long, following the shutout start from Kyle Leahy on Friday night. Seijas didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning as he walked two and departed with a 3-0 lead on 98 pitches.

In the final frame, the Chiefs scored three key insurance runs against the Rattlers bullpen. Nunez singled, Shaw walked and with two outs, Wadye Ynfante singled to score Nunez for the 4-0 lead. Both Shaw and Ynfante scored on a throwing error by Wisconsin catcher Brent Diaz to increase the Chiefs lead to 6-0.

The Timber Rattlers broke through in the bottom of the ninth against Chiefs reliever Sebastian Tabata. A two-out, bases loaded walk scored the first run of the game for the Timber Rattlers and a single cut the Chiefs lead to 6-2. Edgar Escobar induced a groundout to leave the bases loaded and secure the Chiefs 6-2 win.

Seijas (4-4) earned the win as he pitched a season-high 7 1/3 shutout innings allowing three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Tabata pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. Escobar pitched the final 1/3 of an inning en route to his fifth save of the season.

Things looking really bad in Memphis

Edman has 15 multi-hit games this season, which leads the team.

DECISIONS:
W: RHP Williams Perez (6-2)

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
- Cardinals 2B Irving Lopez got things rolling with a two-run bases-loaded ground-rule double in the second inning, giving Springfield a 2-0 lead.

- After the Naturals finally pushed a run across in the top of the seventh to pull within 4-1, an RBI single by SS Kramer Robertson pushed the Cardinals lead back to 5-1. Springfield made it 6-1 when Robertson scored on a wild pitch by Naturals RHP Walker Sheller.

NOTABLES:
- Perez tossed 6.2 scoreless innings before finally allowing a Naturals run. He allowed nine hits and four walks while striking out six and earning his Texas League leading sixth win.

- Cardinals 1B Chris Chinea homered and doubled in a 2-for-4 night. Chinea has two hits in four of his last five games.

- Cardinals LF Randy Arozarena connected on his second homer of the season in the sixth inning.

- Naturals manager Daryl Kennedy was ejected from the game in the fourth inning
Palm Beach

Fire Frogs Broom Palm Beach, 9-7 and 4-0
Game 1: Saturday night's suspended game was resumed in the top of the second. Jefrey Ramos, who already swatted a two-run home run in the first inning, drove in Rusber Estrada and Shean Michel with a two-run triple in the bottom of the second to bump the Frogs lead to 4-0.

Ramos was 3-4 with 4 RBIs, coming up a double short of the cycle. He extended his season-best hitting streak to nine.

After Palm Beach got two back in the third, Riley Delgado had the first of his two RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth to move the Florida lead to 5-2. Delgado went 2-5.

A Jose Martinez RBI groundout in the top of the fifth off LHP Philip Pfeifer brought the Cardinals within two. However, the Fire Frogs response was quick. Brett Langhorne drove a single through the middle with the bases full to score two and restore a four-run lead, 7-3.

Pfeifer (1-2) picked his first win as a Frog, going 5 and 1/3's innings, permitting four runs on five hits and mixing in three strikeouts.

After another Cardinal RBI groundout in the seventh made it 7-4, Drew Lugbauer swatted his fifth long ball over the fence in right in the bottom half. Delgado added the RBI knock for a 9-4 Florida edge.

Luken Baker's three-run bomb in the eighth off RHP Troy Bacon made things a little more interesting, but Florida's bullpen kept the lead. Bacon didn't allow any more runs. RHP Brandon White tossed a perfect ninth to notch his third save.

Shean Michel set a new-team high with four runs scored while also going 3-4 at the dish with two doubles. Kevin Josephina stayed hot, slashing 3-4 with a walk and a run.

RHP Perry DellaValle (2-3) took the loss for Palm Beach, pitching last night's first inning. RHP Griffin Roberts yielded nine hits and five runs over four innings in relief of DellaValle. RHP Ramon Santos also gave up multiple runs while hurling two stanzas.

Game 2: The Florida pitching staff collected its sixth shutout of the season, all coming since May 1. The win came despite the Fire Frogs being doubled up in the hit category: 6-3.

RHP Walter Borkovich got into and out of trouble in his first start of the year, scattering four hits and two walks over three frames. RHP Daysbel Hernandez (4-1) fanned four in his two innings on the mound and picked up his team-leading fourth win. RHP Bradley Roney slammed the door on the Cardinals in the sixth and seventh.

The Fire Frogs offense cracked the scoreboard first in the fourth. William Contreras pushed a single through the left side to plate Delgado for a 1-0 lead. Josephina followed that up by reaching on a fielder's choice chopper to the mound with Greyson Jenista providing the hustle to double the lead. A balk by RHP Ronnie Williams brought Contreras across; 3-0 Florida.

Jenista had two of the Fire Frogs hits in game two, the latter of which was a single in the fifth that plated Izzy Wilson to round out the scoring.

RHP Ben Yokley had a fantastic start for the Cardinals, fanning five and walking just one. Williams (1-2) surrendered three earned runs in the fourth. RHP Mitchell Osnowitz faced just three hitters and gave up a tally. LHP Patrick Dayton allowed a hit over five outs.

Springfield

Tulsa tops Cards in opener, 5-1
The Tulsa Drillers (30-26) claimed the series opener at ONEOK Field with a 5-1 win against the Springfield Cardinals (23-34) on Monday night.

DECISIONS:
W: RHP Nolan Long (3-0)
L: RHP Roel Ramirez (1-1)

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
-Tulsa LF Chris Parmelee swung the Drillers ahead, 2-0, with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the first.

-After CF D.J. Peters added an RBI single in the fourth inning, Tulsa plated two final runs with an RBI base hit from SS Gavin Lux and an RBI sac fly by RF Cody Thomas in the fifth to open it to 5-0.

-The Cardinals got on the board in the seventh. SS Kramer Robertson and CF Randy Arozarena reached on singles around a walk from 3B Evan Mendoza to load the bases with no outs. Robertson darted home on a groundball from INF Rayder Ascanio, but the Drillers turned a double play on the ball and the Cardinals only got the one run in the frame, shaving it to 5-1.

NOTABLES:
-3B Evan Mendoza reached base three times with a single and two walks, extending his hitting streak to eight games.

-SS Kramer Robertson added a fifth game to his hitting streak with a single and the lone run scored for Springfield.

-RHP Hector Mendoza (1.1 IP), RHP Connor Jones (1.0 IP) and LHP Jacob Patterson (1.0 IP) each provided scoreless relief for the Cardinals.
Palm Beach

Palm Beach drops frustrating game vs. Lakeland
The Cardinals had a plethora of opportunities to take the lead in the first 10 innings of the game, however its one hit over that span was not enough as visiting Lakeland took the lead in the 11th for good in a 2-0 victory.

Palm Beach starter Tommy Parsons was simply dominant in his career high eight innings on the mound. The undrafted pitcher from Adrian College struck out 12 batters and allowed just a single hit and walk over that span. Parsons has allowed just two runs spanning his last five starts of 31 ⅓ innings pitched.

While Palm Beach had just one base hit in the game's first 10 innings, the Cardinals had plenty of chances to pull ahead after patience at the plate resulted in seven walks.

In the fifth inning, Palm Beach had runners on second and third with one out before a short fly out to left and groundout ended the inning.

In the seventh, the Cardinals had runners on the corners and one out before a 3-6-3 double play ground ball ended any chances of getting on the scoreboard.

In the 10th, with the winning run just 90 feet away and the bases loaded with one out, a short foul-out to second base with the fielder's momentum taking him away from home plate was still not enough as he threw home in plenty of time to get the runner trying to score out.

Even in the 11th inning and down by two runs, Palm Beach managed to get runners on second and third with one out before a strikeout and shallow fly ball to center ended any hope of a comeback.

In total, the Cardinals left 11 runners on base and were 1-11 with runners in scoring position; The one hit coming off the bat of Julio Rodriguez to start the 11th inning.

On the flip side, Lakeland's offense was shut down all game by the Palm Beach pitching. The special placed runner on second base in the 10th was the first baserunner the opposition had on second all game. In the 11th inning with two outs, Lakeland strung together two straight hits after having just one the previous 10 ⅔ innings which pulled them ahead 2-0 for good.

Out of the pen, Bryan Dobzanski gave Palm Beach everything that was asked of him in his three inning outing, allowing just one earned run and striking out three. He threw 44 total pitches --- his previous season high was 34 and he has thrown more than 25 pitches in just three of his 19 outings all season.

It was a frustrating and unfortunate night for Palm Beach.

Both sides took leads in the 8th inning, with the Tulsa Drillers (31-26) outlasting the Springfield Cardinals (23-35) for a 7-5 win on Tuesday night at ONEOK Field.

NOTABLES:
-SS Kramer Robertson extended his hitting streak to six games, going 2x4 with a two-run double, a single, a hit-by-pitch, one run and two steals.

-3B Evan Mendoza singled and scored in the third inning, extending his hitting streak to nine games.

-In just his second game up from High-A Palm Beach, 1B Zach Kirtley went 1x3 with a single and two walks.

-RHP Angel Rondon tossed a season-high 6.2 innings, at one point retiring 10 straight batters and finishing with four runs on five hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

Yepez Returns to Chiefs with Two Homers, Seven RBI
Juan Yepez returned to the Midwest League and launched two homers with a career-high seven RBI in his Peoria Chiefs 2019 debut in a 12-5 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits Tuesday night. The Chiefs, playing as the road team in their home park due to flooding in Iowa, improved to 25-31 on the season with two games left in the series.

The River Bandits, playing as the home team, took the lead in the bottom of the first against Chiefs starter Colin Schmid. With the bases loaded, David Hensley singled home the first run of the game and Trey Dawson hit a two-run single to increase their lead to 3-0.

The Chiefs answered immediately in the top of the second against River Bandits starter Jose Bravo. Ivan Herrera led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Brady Whalen. Yepez stepped to the plate for the first time in 2019 and launched a game-tying 3-run homer on the first pitch from Bravo. Bryce Denton, also returning to the Chiefs, followed with a double and Brandon Benson walked before both runners moved up on a groundout. Denton scored from third on a Brendan Donovan groundout to put the Chiefs ahead 4-3.

Peoria added to their lead in the top of the third. Nolan Gorman led off with a double and scored on a one-out single from Whalen to increase the lead to 5-3. Yepez launched an even further two-run homer out to center, tying his career-high for homers set on June 11, 2017 against Clinton.

The Chiefs added on in the fourth inning against reliever Joey Gonzalez. Brendan Donovan hit his fourth homerun of the season, to the opposite field, for an 8-3 Chiefs lead on their third homer of the game.

Leading 8-5, the Chiefs put the game away in the seventh and eighth. With one out in the seventh, Herrera walked, Whalen singled, and Yepez walked to load the bases. Denton picked up his first RBI of the season with a single to left for a 9-5 lead and Benson walked to bring home Whalen for a 10-5 Chiefs lead.
