Big fan of the Fletcher pick.

Flores has been good all around. It's nice having baseball guys in there and not a bunch of MBA/JD dorks.

That Luhnow MBA dork wasn't half bad, though.

He (and Sid, Carlos, etc.) was sociopathic. Not unlike what's currently in the FO, but I feel better about actual baseball guys.

Luhnow builds a great team. How he does it... yikes.

Sociopathic? How so?

Treating human beings like cattle. His general demeanor of explaining away moves about players with their likability and then turning around and signing Osuna because of his current usefulness. Sure, they do what a lot of FOs are doing now too, including many Cardinals guys, but Luhnow specifically is bad. The way the Brady Aiken thing was handled too. They offered him a lowball that they knew he'd reject on purpose to posture themselves for the next draft.

The Dodgers draft is so good

This is what happens when you have an almost unlimited budget and an absolutely top notch front office. An extremely desirable/marketable city doesnt hurt, either.

Unfortunately, we kinda have none of those things right now.

Nothing really keeping us, or the rest of the league, from hiring some of those brains away from LA. But we'd need to spend money on roles we typically groom for promotion through our own farm. The Dodgers hired Friedman & Co away from Tampa. No reason we couldn't do something similar.

Fletcher signs for $1.5m. Only a few hundred thousand over his slot and pretty close to the way I value him.

With this news, and the news of a few others signing for slot (and most unsigned players looking like slots), and factoring in the 5% overage that they tend to go to without losing a pick, and then additional $125,000 you can offer kids after round 10 for free, the Cardinals essentially have ~$700,000 to offer any player after the 10th round to sign. I doubt they give it all to one player, but rather will spread it out over several of the high school players they took (already signing the 12th round pick for $200,000 and losing $75,000 off their pool).

It's possible they get McFarlane to sign for that amount if they push that high. I'd guess they'll get the Auburn sophomore lefty, and the HS pitcher out of Illinois signed, but still don't think that gets McFarlane done.

They certainly have options to throw $700,000 at and force them to turn it down.

McKenzie is a wonderful athlete who has a chance to stick defensively. Will $700k get him away from Vanderbilt? Doubt it.

Chris Newell had a number well over a million I believe, so I doubt $700k gets him done, either. He's going to Virginia.

McFarlane has a dream commitment to Miami and has said he wanted like $1.5m to sign.

With any of them though, throw the offer at them and make them turn it down.

My guess remains that they get the Auburn sophomore lefty signed (Jack Owens), Tyler Statler (projectible arm committed to SEMO), Thomas Hart (another quick armed high school kid who can spin it committed to a Juco), Zade Richardson (Juco freshman C produced with a .385 average and more walks than K's).

Those guys are who I expect to sign and none of the other high school players. The Cardinals are kind of a team that signs most everybody they take round 20 and under and then don't really sign many of the HS kids after that. Some teams sign most everybody up to round 33 and then don't sign the HS players.
