Re: Derrick Rose
@spider: I took it as a joke that and thought it was a good one.
@bschulte: Role model? Who said that? Like thrill and lipp said, likable guy that genuinely seems humbled and grateful for his success. I like him, mainly because he's really good. The ACT stuff ... like lipp said big difference between cheating on a test when you are 17 and some of the things athletes and celeberities and politicians do today. And he took that test to get into a school to play one year to be eligible because of some ridiculous rule. It was a test to predict his academic success when academics weren't even an issue.
The neighborhood Derrick comes from is among the most dangerous in the country. I'm not passing out excuses to people from those environments, but I'm also going to put things in perspective. It's survival mode for those folks, every day, and cheating on a test that means absolutely NOTHING isn't high on my list of things to get worked up over.

Pretty much, without an opportunity to reach pro, where'd he be today? Yea, I think if my choices were making millions playing a sport or dealing drugs to get by, there's a lot worse things I'd do than cheat on the ACT to reach the former.bobby bo wrote:This.jim wrote:The neighborhood Derrick comes from is among the most dangerous in the country. That little crossover at 2:24 is just disgusting. I might have to watch a couple of Bulls games this year.jim wrote: [/youtube]

Re: Derrick Rose
Derrick Rose is No Role Model
Interesting timing on this article. Look, if this whole thread had been about Rose's skills as a basketball player only I'd have no objections and wouldn't have said a word. It was drifting into role model territory and "Rose as role model" is one of the biggest pet peeves I have presently.

The thing is, no one said anything even close to "Rose is a role model".bschulte wrote:Derrick Rose is No Role Model

Where does your Rose hate stem from? I'm guessing it's because he didn't go to U of I?

it sort of makes me want to buy a Derrick Rose jersey, but then I realized that I would look offensive in a tank top

Hope you guys have a bib for all this slobber.
I love his game. It's great that he doesn't say dumb things about himself. But he doesn't really seem that interesting to me as a person and therefore I don't find him incredibly 'likeable' on anything other than a player level. Seems a little dull, really. This is the NBA, however, so any superstar that isn't a flaming ahole is likeable as a person.
