For starters, the longer the wait, the more time you have to discuss a trade with someone. The more you negotiate and the closer you get to the pick's deadline, the more likely you'll be able to get an opposing GM to fold under the pressure and make a lopsided trade...
There's also some behind-the-scenes strings being pulled that you don't necessarily hear about.
