I still haven't seen anyone defend the merits of the rule other than just saying, "Other professions have requirements, why shouldn't the NBA?"

Why is 19 so much more valid than 18?

The rule is stupid, and for all practical purposes Rose was forced into that situation. I could care less what he did to be honest to get into Memphis. Makes ZERO difference to me. In fact if he did cheat I think it's great that he took a giant crap on the entire dumb ass process.

I don't know if it was him fighting the Man as much as it was necessitated by having the reading ability of your average Dora the Explorer viewer.

I think the rules is there to benefit the NBA, the NCAA, and NBA veterans. It really helps more people than it hurts. By that standard, it seems like a reasonable idea to me.

No it doesn't. What do you have to support that? Why doesn't MLB institute this rule if it helps?

Nowhere in the CBA does it state that you have to be better than 99% of all other basketball players. That's the NBA hiring standard, not a requirement.

Well, in that case... You don't have to be an engineer to be hired as an engineer, again, you just have to find a hiring manager stupid enough to hire you. You don't have to be an accountant to be hired as an an accountant. You don't have to be a lawyer to be hired by a law firm to be a lawyer. You don't have to be a pilot to fly a plane. You don't have to be a captain to navigate an oil tanker. All of these are hiring standards as you can get hired to do any of these jobs without the necessary training. You'll just suck ass and be fired immediately, probably killing people before you do in a lot of the scenarios.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that it is a requirement to possess a pilot's license to fly a plane. And I assume it's a requirement that you have to be licensed to captain an oil tanker. To be an accountant, you have to pass the CPA exam. You have to have a license to practice law, also. All of those things are mandated.

You are talking about practicing one's profession, however. I am simply talking about being hired as one of these professionals. There's no requirement to be hired as a professional only to perform in an official capacity. Same as basketball.

This is really a stupid argument, btw.

You are correct.

Likewise, the NBA isn't opposed to hiring 18 year olds. They're just opposed to letting them play. I'm sure Rose could have gotten a job sweeping the floor at halftime when he was 18.

I agree - stupid.

The NBA and its players both agreed to the rule, so I assume it's helping them. Why would the NBA institute the rule, and why would the players agree to it, if it didn't help.

I think it's a no-brainer that it helps the NCAA.

Why is 18 more valid than 17 for MLB and the NHL?
