USCHO Staff Report • Wednesday, November 2, 2011

An article in Tuesday’s Grand Forks Herald says a lawsuit filed in federal court Tuesday by Sioux Indians who support the University of North Dakota’s use of the Fighting Sioux nickname could affect next week’s reconsideration of the issue by the North Dakota Legislature.

Attorneys for the Spirit Lake Sioux tribe filed the lawsuit against the NCAA in Fargo, following through in their plight to save the Sioux nickname.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the tribe and Archie Fool Bear, individually and as a representative of Standing Rock petitioners who are seeking a reservation-wide referendum on the nickname issue. It claims that the NCAA’s efforts to stop use of the name and logo “violate Native American civil rights, equal protection rights and religious rights

I don't want them to change their name. It seems stupid to me.

However, just before my brother transferred out of Grand Forks I had him pick me up a Sioux jersey and it is great. So for selfish reasons if they do change the name I hope they change their name to the Mud Ducks or something.

Archie Fool Bear? I don't know if the tradition of Sioux naming their child after the first thing they see after walking out of the teepee is an urban legend or whatever, but I am picturing his father walking out of his teepee to see Archie (the comic book Archie) messin' with sasquatch. Only sasquatch is a grizzly bear.

The university dropped the Fighting Sioux nickname but there is no replacement- they are going to be called UND, apparently. They do not have to remove the Sioux logo from the granite floor of the arena, etc.

I would prefer UNDFSGFYMF's, but this is acceptable.

Just change the spelling and use Johnny Cash as the mascot. Problem solved.

North Dakota to resume use of Fighting Sioux nickname

USCHO Staff Report • Feb. 9, 2012

A petition with more than 17,000 signatures was delivered to North Dakota’s secretary of state office on Tuesday supporting the reinstatement of the Fighting Sioux nickname to all of UND’s athletic teams.

The Grand Forks Herald reported that petitions were counted and numbered, with counting and verifying of signatures starting Wednesday. Tuesday night’s filing will immediately suspend the “repeal act” adopted by the legislature during its November special session.

Then on Wednesday, another Herald article stated that the head of North Dakota’s Board of Higher Education, Grant Shaft, said the board may go to court if a law requiring the University of North Dakota to revert to its Fighting Sioux nickname is restored.

Also Wednesday, UND president Robert Kelley issued a statement saying that the university “has resumed the use of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo for our athletic teams.”

Wisconsin's potential non-conference hockey scheduling agreement (when Wisconsin leaves the WCHA to join the B1G) with North Dakota hinges on the school officially retiring the 'Fighting Sioux' nickname. Earlier this week UND resumed using the nickname.

According to an article in the Grand Forks Herald on Friday, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa reiterated in formal terms this week “that (they) won’t allow their athletic teams to compete with schools under NCAA sanctions due to American Indian imagery.”
