College sports exploits unpaid black athletes. But they could force a change.
Disproportionately black football and basketball players are making disproportionately white administrators and coaches rich.

Illinois after all ends up firing Cubit. Wise move.

My list would consist of...(no order)

1) Brett Venables DC Clemson
2) Ed Warriner OC Ohio State
3) Mike Bobo Colorado State
4) PJ Fleck WMU

It'll be difficult given how late it is.

Im shocked to put it mildly, I'm struggling to put my dislike of Smith as a HC interfere with this hire. On paper, it's a potential great hire. He's known throughout the state, especially Chicago. He's not charismatic but he should recruit well and brings credibility.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan either. Lovie has never been exceptional at anything. Maybe this is where he'll shine, but I've got to see it to believe it.

He was an average-ish coach at the NFL level, which makes him exceptional within the coaching profession. He knows how to coach defense and should do pretty well on recruiting. If he can find someone to handle the offensive side he could have them competitive in just a year or two. Even if you don't think he's a particularly great coach he is way better than that program warrants in its current state. I would be ecstatic if I was an Illinois fan.

If you're a Fightin Illini fan, you have to love this move.

1. U of I is not exactly a coveted job at this point (or for the past couple decades). They are 52-83 going back to Zook's arrival. Last conference title was about 15 years ago.
2. Lovie Smith was an NFL coach of the year, made it to the superbowl, and coached in the league for over a decade. He's under 60 years of age.

I'll ignore race and all the doors this possibly opens into Chicago, a spot where UofI has notoriously been blackballed or whatever from recruiting due - at least in part - to poor race relations.

For U of I to get a coach of Lovie Smith's talent is almost unbelievable. If you think he's a bad coach, then fine. But, it's tough to make that argument based on any sort of anything.
