Robbery suspect left his wallet
By Vanessa Miller
Thursday, January 4, 2007

Police nabbed a bank robbery suspect after the man who slipped away from US Bank in Longmont with several drawers worth of cash left behind an incriminating piece of evidence — his wallet.

George Alex Martinez, 34, of Longmont, is accused of robbing three banks in the city in late November, and police are investigating whether he's connected with any other Boulder County robberies.

Martinez was arrested Nov. 27 after his ID was found inside the wallet, which a teller told police was left behind during the Nov. 25 robbery of the bank at 436 Coffman St., according to court documents recently made public.

"When someone leaves behind their wallet, that really helps us out," Longmont police detective Stephen Desmond said.

Investigators later linked Martinez to a robbery at the same bank one week earlier, plus a Nov. 22 robbery at World Savings, 401 Coffman St., Desmond said.

"He was a repeat customer," he said.

No one was hurt in any of the robberies, but Martinez is accused of forcing a person to drive him home at gunpoint after the Nov. 25 robbery.

Police are investigating whether Martinez was involved in any other robberies in the area, although there haven't been any obvious connections so far, Desmond said.

"But we are working with the FBI and talking with Boulder police and Boulder County," he said.

Martinez is being held at the Boulder County Jail on suspicion of three counts of aggravated robbery, one count of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and one count of second-degree kidnapping.

He has a lengthy criminal history in the state, including charges of weapon possession, harassment, sex assault, motor vehicle theft, kidnapping, first-degree assault, domestic violence, possession of dangerous drugs and larceny, according to Colorado court records.
