I don't get paying for another teams on field manager. Makes no sense to me.

We really believe in Joe Maddon that much?

I guess it depends on what it would cost.

But yeah, I do agree that paying for a manager is silly.

They paid Tony what, $5M this year? And would have next year? So Maddon = $1.4M so they could send $3M of cash and organizational filler to Tampa and still spend less than they would have on Tony.

I'm not saying he's the best option, but it's not really that cost would be the issue.

Joe Maddon's next move with be his cash-in move. He's not leaving Tampa without a hefty raise because there will be plenty of teams willing to pay him top dollar in the $5,000,000 range.

I have no interest in Scioscia. He's basically a less talented TLR, and as crazy as TLR was, he never engineered anything remotely as bad as the Napoli-for-Wells trade.

Was Scioscia the one responsible for that trade or pushing for it anyway?

Hasn't it been pointed out around here that his Angels have had a freaky long streak of outperforming their expectations (pythagorean?)?

he refused to play Napoli regularly in LA despite him hitting pretty much like he is now. The difference between Napoli now and Napoli then is pretty much playing time/plate appearances.

You have to think he's gone as well right?

Chris said no, but it depends on how the wife is doing and who they hire to replace TLR

La Russa has been managing the Cardinals for sixteen seasons, which, in baseball terms, is several eons; no Yankees manager has ever been in charge as long as La Russa was in charge of the Cardinals. The last Cardinals manager before La Russa was Joe Torre. Joe Torre. He won four World Series, took another team to the playoffs, retired, and took a job inside Major League Baseball in the time that La Russa has been in St. Louis. Tony La Russa has been managing in St. Louis since Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada were Columbus Clippers.

But there are plenty of ways to make that happen without a net 'raise' for next year. Maybe they can sign an extension that slightly ups the value next year and then really kicks in for 2013.

I'm just saying that if they want him they can probably get it done without paying a dime more than they would have to keep Tony around.

That's hard to imagine in a DH league.

I think you almost have to give Albert the chance to play and manage. It's the one thing we have and would offer over other teams that can give Pujols the status recognition he wants and deserves. He would probably be at least an average manager. He also might be enticed to not have such a bloated contract since it would hamper the ability of his team to win.

I'd love someone like Mike Sarbaugh.
