2. Who replaces Tony La Russa?
La Russa's retirement as Cardinals manager on Monday morning was the shocker of the day. The only clue anyone had, and you had to listen carefully, came when he was asked in the celebration whether he was retiring and answered, "I don't want to spoil the moment.''

I don't think the Maddon situation is terribly different from the Epstein situation. I don't think Maddon is necessarily itching to get out of there like Epstein was, but if he really wants the Cards job I don't think Tampa will force him to stay for one year before losing him if they can get something back.

Pujols isn't going to make his decision based on TLR. He's going to sign a long-term deal. LaRussa wouldn't have been around for it.

What about the thought that Tony made his decision based on Albert?

Well, if I'm 36 years into an intensely stressful job, I'm making the decision because I need a break from it, whether permanent or temporary. Not based on someone else's decision. Hell, he and Dunc have been married forever and he didn't wait for DD to retire.

Tony said the 2 toughest jobs in an organization are GM (um ok, an homage to MO sitting next to you)

..and hitting coach.

So is the thought that the Cardinals wouldn't be able to get Maddon, or that they shouldn't?

McGwire, if we go internally (which I don't think we will), is right up there with our other internal choices.

If Pujols walks, and I think ownership knows if he will or won't based off previous negotiations, I think the Cards will try and go after a big name manager.

The Rays are opening a new ballpark and Maddon, more than anyone, is the face of that franchise.

They are? I think they are trying to get a new ballpark, but aren't there yet.

You may be confusing them with the Marlins.

If you're comparing the Cubs vs Cardinals jobs, which team would offer more money and better terms? Would the Cubs offer a bonus for winning the World Series?

Who is out there who places a high value on defense and base running fundamentals?

I think Big Mac loves hitting and being out of the spot light to throw his name into the hat.

If the Cards say they want Maddon, I think he will respond and then the Rays would consider talking.
