Against my better judgment, I watched most of the State of the Union. I saw Republicans seemed to give Trump as many standing ovations as any other president would get. PRO-TIP: Any Republican that does not want to be lumped in with Trump should probably consider NOT giving him a standing ovation, for any reason. I realize it's just a dumb tradition, but Trump said some crazy [expletive] in this speech. For example, gross lies and fearmongering about immigrants murdering people. Republicans still gave him standing O after standing O, though, if not on that, on plenty of other things.

He also called out Socialism, saying the USA will never be a socialist country, and did the old strawman about Socialism being authoritarian. Trump is the one who wants to be an authoritarian. He openly admires dictators. The cognitive dissonance is off the charts and yet barely anyone notices any more. The fact Republicans are using the SOTU to try to tamp down Socialism says a lot.

SOTU addresses are now mostly partisan exercises. Supporters of the president's party are the people most likely to tune in, so all of this is now rallying of the base. And with the base watching carefully, Congressional officeholders of the president's party are going to stand and clap on cue because they don't want to be primaried next year.

It's political theater at its emptiest and most long-winded.

Absolutely. The SOTU used to be effectively an administrative report. This year we accomplished A, B, C, D and economic indicators point to X, Y, Z. Now it's just a campaign event on national TV.

Have some sympathy, guys. It's hard when you're the most powerful person in the world and people are mean to you.

Trump Lied About Getting Special Permission From El Paso Fire Dept, Says Fire Dept

Quote:
President Donald Trump told the crowd at his rally in El Paso, Texas, on Monday that he got special permission from the El Paso Fire Department to let 10,000 people inside the El Paso County Coliseum.

El Paso Fire Department spokesman Enrique D. Aguilar told The El Paso Times that not only did the fire department not give Trump special permission, but the Coliseum had about 6,500 people in it during the president’s rally. Aguilar says that number was at capacity and well within its standard allowance.

Life safety is paramount to fire chiefs, so I'm not surprised they came out quickly to refute Trump's comments. Because if Trump's claims were true, the state fire marshal would be on the phone with El Paso FD faster than you could read this sentence.

Plus, why would the El Paso FD look the other way when these crowds have a reputation for being unruly? (And sure enough, they lived up to it again.)

The president was weighed last week as part of his annual physical, and is now at 243 pounds, according to Dr. Sean Conley, the White House physician, a four pound gain since last year’s physical. At 6 feet 3 inches tall, Mr. Trump now has a body mass index of 30.4. Anything over 30 is considered obese.
