Trump does not want primary fights, but he's far too delusional to realize it. The GOP has tough challenges to incumbent senators in AZ, CO, ME. Those are not states you run a backwoods Bible-thumping anti-abortion anti-science Trumpist against a sane Republican and win. They have Tillis up in NC, a state Trump won by less than 5 points where there are plenty of educated folks in Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Asheville. They've got Ernst in IA running with Trump for the first time since she said she'd go fight against Democrats overreaching (LOL) and she's catching a lot of smoke at her appearances back home from voters who are not happy with Trump, esp over his stupid tariff battles with Mexico and China.

Probably good news, unless the govt decides it’s worth another trial.

So we're not going to send the guy to jail for saving people's lives, but we're also not going to declare him definitively innocent. Got it.

This guy's story brought me to this NYT interactive graphic/video piece a few weeks ago, which was really pretty fascinating. It shows how, going back long before Trump, the US deployed a strategy to steer migrants away from ports of entry and into the desert frontier so that more of them would die in the process. Thousands have died. Humanitarians like this guy leave supplies like water and food for them in the desert to help save lives. In this piece you'll see border agents emptying out and kicking over the water jugs left out for them, so that they're more likely to die. This all seems pretty damn dark. Maybe the wall would be more humane in a weird way. Maybe it wouldn't make a difference, but what we have now is a strategy of deliberately steering migrants into a dangerous desert crossing specifically so that many will die, in the hope that it acts as some kind of deterrent to other.

Here's the piece: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/05/29/opinion/migrant-crisis.html

Look at all the yellow dots.

Implied without a verdict, isn't it?

So the latest thing is Trump is telling people to break laws to get the wall built, and he will pardon them later. That there are still people who think he will deliver on a promise later on is hilarious to me. He literally has made a living of leaving other people holding the bag.

Washington Post: Trump told officials he would pardon them if they break the law building border wall
Quote:
President Donald Trump, in his push to make good on his promise to supporters by Election Day, has told officials he will pardon them should they break any laws in attempting to finish construction on the wall at the US-Mexico border, The Washington Post reported, citing current and former officials involved with the project.

Trump has instructed aides to speed up the process of building the wall, directing them to rush through billions of dollars' worth of construction contracts, blow past environmental regulations and to "take the land" necessary by eminent domain, the Post reported Tuesday.

"Don't worry, I'll pardon you," Trump has told officials during meetings at the White House about the wall when aides raised that some of those orders would be illegal, according to the Post. An unnamed White House official told the newspaper that the President is merely joking when he makes such statements about pardons.

29 Laws Waived in the Rio Grande Valley Today to Build the Border Wall
Quote:
The acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan used his power to waive laws in order to build the border wall to dismiss 29 federal laws in the Rio Grande Valley on Friday afternoon. The waivers apply to planned border wall segments in Starr County near Rio Grande City and La Grulla as well as much of the unwalled portion of Hidalgo County, totaling approximately 17 miles.

The laws that no longer apply to these areas include the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the Farmland Protection Policy Act. Along with the 29 laws listed, McAleenan waived “all federal, state, or other laws, regulations, and legal requirements of, deriving from, or related to the subject of” the stated laws.

There is, of course, no reason for the Trump administration to waive these laws unless they intend to break them. In the process of border wall construction, they will pollute our air, fill in critical wetland areas, harm endangered species, encroach on our precious farmland and all manner of other destructive acts in order to build border walls.

This extraordinary power to simply dismiss laws that Congress voted on and presidents signed, as well as state and local laws, was granted to an unelected member of the White House cabinet in the Real ID Act of 2005. Its authors were set on pushing through 14 miles of border wall in California that had been held up by legal challenges since the mid-1990s because of the massive environmental destruction they would cause. The Real ID legislation would not have passed on its own and so was inserted into a bill that funded Indonesian tsunami relief, as well as the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Now it is being used to wage war on border communities. The laws that protect people in other parts of the country do not apply to us.
