Senate rejection of Trump border emergency no longer certain

As a Thursday showdown vote in the Senate neared, GOP Sens. Mike Lee of Utah, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and others were talking with the White House about related legislation that would curb the ability of presidents to declare future emergencies. If Trump would commit to signing a bill handcuffing future emergency declarations, more GOP senators might support his border emergency declaration in Thursday's vote.

Lee's proposal, released late Tuesday, says a presidential emergency would last 30 days unless Congress votes to extend it. It would apply to future emergencies, not Trump's current border emergency.

In a Wednesday interview with Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel, she argued that morals didn’t matter much when it came to presidents.

“You could be the nicest, most moral person in the world,” McDaniel told Chris Cuomo of CNN. “I don’t want you to be the president because I want to make sure you’re aligned with my politics.”

North Dakota moves to nullify its 1975 Equal Rights support

North Dakota's male-dominated Legislature is considering a resolution to nullify its 1975 support of the Equal Rights Amendment, a move seen as offsetting revived efforts nationally to enshrine the nearly half-century-old measure in the U.S. Constitution.

The resolution sponsored by seven male Republican lawmakers says Congress' deadline for ratification of the gender-equality amendment passed 40 years ago and is no longer valid.

Toni Van Pelt, president of the National Organization for Women, said North Dakota's move is clearly in response to the growing momentum to ratify the amendment and called the state's effort a "fruitless exercise."
