This is a long article that talks about the Silent Sam statue, but also that the U of North Carolina's football stadium is named after a guy who killed a bunch of black people. The incident was in 1898 which has been called a "race riot" but it was actually a forceful takeover of the city of Wilmington's government by white supremacists. Estimates of the death toll is 60 to 300 black people, but since they tried to bury the real history, no one knows. The guy also grew up on a plantation that had slaves when he was a kid.

Still Standing: Colfax LA -One of Trump's beautiful statues for 3 whites who died in 1870s in process of massacring well over a hundred African Americans.

The incident became the basis of two novels by African American writers: The Marrow of Tradition by Charles Chesnutt, who was one of the top realist writers of his era, and Hanover, or the Persecution of the Lowly by Jack Thorne.

I've taught Chesnutt's novel several times: although it can seem dated in spots, it is a major political novel of its time--and ours--because it asks whether a multiracial republic can survive, or whether racial demagoguery will lead to tyranny. Ultimately, Chesnutt compares Jim Crow America and the fall of the Roman Republic and examines the destruction of civic virtue--the willingness to sacrifice self-interest and to give one's talents to the public good.

Chesnutt understood Social Darwinism quite well, and he attacks segregation as a misapplication of Darwin's theories. (A fancy way to put it is that Darwin's theories are not teleological--that is, lead to any kind of historical destiny. That is, Darwin stresses that the future is unknowable, and instead tries to understand how the past led to the present. White supremacy, however, is an ideology of racial destiny or inevitability.)

Essentially, Chesnutt argues that segregation is itself a flawed form of social selection that selects and rewards the vicious traits that would destroy a republic--especially those that are critical to civic virtue.

...and closely tied to another ideology of destiny and inevitability. All the below is cut/pasted with a couple notes added for clarity, from the Wiki pages of famous white supremacists.

Spoiler: show
William Luther Pierce...Born in Atlanta, Georgia, to a Presbyterian family of Scots-Irish and English descent,

(The Daily Stormer) is registered in the name of (founder Andrew) Anglin's father Greg, who runs a Christian-inspired counseling service in Worthington

(Australian founder of the Conservative Nationalist Party William Fraser) Anning is a Catholic,

The Council of Conservative Citizens considers itself a traditionalist group opposing liberals and what they refer to as mainstream conservatives; it supports national self-determination, immigration restriction, federalism, and home rule, and opposes free trade and global capitalism. Its specific issues include states' rights, race relations (especially interracial marriage, which it opposes), and Christian right values.

(Founder of American Renaissance Jared) Taylor was born on September 15, 1951, to Christian missionary parents in Kobe, Japan.

(Self-described "white nationalist, populist, traditionalist, with libertarian leanings" Paul) Fromm was born in Bogotá, Colombia, and grew up in Etobicoke in a devout Catholic family.

White Nationalist Louis Beam "first became engaged on the far right as a paramilitary Klansman, later with ties to Christian Identity groups"

Richard Girnt Butler (February 23, 1918 – September 8, 2004) was an American engineer and white supremacist. After dedicating himself to the Christian Identity movement, a racialist offshoot of British Israelism, Butler founded the neo-Nazi Aryan Nations and would become one of the most well known and influential leaders of the American far-right.

David Duke speaks against what he alleges as Jewish control of the Federal Reserve Bank, the U.S. federal government, and the media. Duke supports the preservation of what he considers to be Western culture and traditionalist Christian family values,

(American neo-nazi and conspiracy theorist Mike) Enoch grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey, in an upper-middle class Episcopalian family.

(Fired from the Washington Times, in the 90s, because even back then for that disgusting publication he was far too racist, Samuel T) Francis wrote the CoCC's Statement of Principles, which "called for America to be a Christian nation" and "oppose[d] all efforts to mix the races of mankind."

Former Chairman of the British Right Party, who was expelled from that far-right group because he was too far right, in 2009 (Nick Griffin) also said that: "a lot of people find the sight of two grown men kissing in public really creepy. I understand that homosexuals don't understand that but that's how a lot of us [Christians] feel." He also suggests that gay pride marches "[verge] on heterophobia which, like its twin Christianophobia, is on the rise."

When those institutions rid themselves of the immense sin in which they operate in the name of, we might get somewhere on this.

That No. Carolina saga Pioneer and Sigh wrote about is similar to the saga behind the Colfax LA monument to the 3 white "heros" dying to quell a riot for "white supremacy" while untold hundreds of African Americans were slaughtered.

Purposely buried by history. Worth reading about.

Blacks managed to have some govt control after the war thanks to their greater #s(there were that many slaves) and aid of Willie Calhoun, who was heir of the notorious and massive plantation of his father Meredith Calhoun .

Willie Calhoun, interesting character, attempted to undo the massive plantation of his father after the war and his father's death in 1869.

It culminated in a battle at the courthouse, basically a continuation of the Civil War a decade later. The overmatched govt and militia of the freed blacks was destroyed in murderous fashion.

No one was ever brought to justice for this. The chance for any black representation and basic rights in this large region were destroyed for a century more.

I can't help but ask why do public monuments to white supremacy still stand? This isn't even a Confederate statue.

In wondering about how this monument still stands- it helps me realize the level of racism, and disenfranchisement under Jim Crow, and continuing today. Colfax is 67 % AA, while it is in Grant Parish, 85% white.

Can't the black city majority just have it removed? Being in local majority never meant much during plantation days, and still doesn't. Also, when economically and racially hamstrung for generations, removing a monument to white supremacy, may not be a priority - incredible as that sounds.

Re: the argument for leaving it up as a reminder of the horrors of white supremacy and slavery in the US.

How many reminders like these are needed? Maybe move it to a prominent museum if that is the intent. There is no accompanying explanation to justly explain what actually occurred. And even there, the explanation is long, and would tend to be ignored.

Nah- IMO it needs to be removed completely, lest it become a place of honor for reinvigorated white supremacists under Trump and feckless GOP.

"Heroes" fighting for white supremacy. How did this stay up for 147 years?

The right wing is losing its [expletive] this weekend over the New York Times' 1619 series. It's mind-boggling that we're still litigating the meaning of race-based slavery and the Civil War 150 years after they ended.

OTOH (and I ave to keep repeating this so that one day I might believe it) if this pus has been festering under our collective skin, better to expose it, disinfect, and get on with life before it causes a fatal infection.
