Empathy and macro-view thinking about culture, race, gender, sexuality, and economics are abilities like anything. Some people can bench press 300 pounds. Some people can only bench press 50 pounds. Just like those muscles, you can train yours to be stronger but you'll still have limitations and everyone is different. Also like weight training, the older you get, the harder it is to do.

I just wish everyone started from a position of not reflexively getting defensive when confronted with an opinion that contradicts their own. Before a mindset can change, the mind has to be open to the very existence of other experiences. After that we can start trying to get people to come around to complicated but objective truths about bias and market forces and the role that plays in our lives. Humility and kindness are universal positives. I'm not good at taking that tone with what I view as ignorance, but I should try harder.

It's not anything like butterfly effect -more like a stomping bull effect.

The future looks better. Next generation is not like us. We are all more mixed than ever. And we're probably currently more mixed than we know. (A couple friends have had DNA testing - very interesting stuff). And people of color generally know more than white folk or Bill Cosby does about navigating this world as is.

Yes there literally is no such thing as a "pure blood" white person or black person. In fact testing has shown people we consider to be white more often have mixed ancestry than people who we consider black. But it doesn't matter. There is only one species of human.

I read an article a few months ago, I think it was nat geo. Basically with all the dna ancestry studies they have been able to trace all male dna back to a single woman in Africa. They don’t call here Eve though.

This is about trans rather than racial issues, but man is it rough to watch now.

When I consider how far the needle has moved on these kinds of issues, even in my own thinking, it helps me understand the Trump backlash. Societal norms changed so quickly for a huge chunk of society and a lot of people just couldn't or had no interest in keeping up that fast.
