ICE was formed in '03 and was committing plenty of gestapo hijinks during Obama. It's a topic that not enough people are paying attention to. It needs to be addressed, not just lumped in with Trump. The danger of Trump is continuing the same willful ignorance of injustice that lead to his election. We don't just want the bad man to go away. We want to build a better system of governance.

This guy, Sean McElwee, is the best follow in my media diet for shedding light on ICE's atrocities (and progressive lefty politics that don't quite veer into socialism, in general). This is just going back to the beginning of last week. Strap yourself in for a deluge of disgrace.

Spoiler: show

Most people don't realize Obama was an aggressive deporter. He deported more people than any president in our history.

I stand corrected. But I agree that things need to be overhauled.

My understanding is the numbers under him are inflated due to him counting turnaways at the border as deportations (which was new), and people use or misuse that number depending on the point they're trying to make. Obama has used it to sound "tough" (which is unfortunate), and conservatives have used it to say "he did it too" or they'll point out the truth to say he wasn't that tough.

Not saying that he didn't genuinely deport a lot of people, because I'm sure he did.

EDIT - Snopes article about it:

LA Times has more
http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-oba ... story.html

Quote:
Expulsions of people who are settled and working in the United States have fallen steadily since his first year in office, and are down more than 40% since 2009

I didn't realize that either about Obama. Regardless, ICE is an awful agency and it seems it has taken a sadistic turn under Trump. Not sure if these egregious cases are just getting reported differently under Trump or if ICE has always been this sadistic. It needs to be abolished.

Not sure if this is the fascist state or not but a GOP Rep is asking Sessions to check ID's and arrest dreamers at the SOTU.

I was waiting for something like that. I was thinking today that I full expect to find out tomorrow morning that ICE was there detaining the guests of those Democrats who said they were bringing undocumented immigrants as their guests. My hope is that they are actually bringing normal, actual legal US born citizens with Hispanic heritage and just saying that they're bringing illegal aliens so that ICE will do something extremely stupid and damaging to their department when they just swarm and grab these people without asking any questions, claim they are illegal aliens and then find out right there that they are born and raised US citizens with it all being captured on camera. Let's see the Trumpsters spin that one.

I do realize that my hope is borderline insane and dangerous to the guests 'baiting' ICE so it won't happen. And it probably shouldn't. I just want something so humiliating to happen to ICE, Trump and the GOP that I can't stop laughing about it for weeks. I really need a good laugh.
