I know McCaskill is out to pasture, but she reps a lot of the complaints about center right democrats.

America is, generally, not as far along the left line as Bernie and Elizabeth. Free stuff from the government does not play well in Midwest, because they’re just convinced that they’re never the ones getting the free stuff. You know, they’re workin’ really hard, and they can’t afford to retire. That was part of the thing that Trump did. He said, basically, I’m going to tap into your anger and your angst, we’re gonna blame the Mexicans and the Muslims for everything that’s wrong in the world… The reality is that if you start saying that we’re going to let folks coming across the border have no criminal penalty, and we’re going to allow them to get access to free health care through Medicaid programs, then you are gonna lose a whole slew of voters that aren’t crazy about Donald Trump, but are not gonna go there. It really would be a very difficult thing to overcome in—” she listed state after state, noting that they were all “states we really need to win.”

Interesting to look at this "Congress voting with Trump" tracker on 538 in light of recent discussions

Manchin aside, the top 4 Dems on this who voted with Trump the most all lost their seats in 2018. Seems like at least some aspects of this "you need conservative Dems in red states" or even the concept of red states, ought to be re-examined. I still think West Virginia could be flipped if you go at it the right way.

Sinema is not surprising to me, having heard interviews with her, and it'll be interesting to see how she holds up. If Mark Kelly wins the other seat there, I'd bet he ends up voting more liberal than her.

This [expletive] here is why many many progressives over the years would say that Dems and Rs were all the same.

the real reason Blue and company voted as they did is because Republicans bought off Democratic support by making a few of their districts less competitive (which also happened in several other states during the epic Republican gerrymander binge of 2010). Better for Blue and company to cruise to an easy reelection victory in a powerless minority position than have a real chance of governing the state — and thus face demands from their constituents to do something to improve their lives, which might infringe on future consulting or buckraking careers.

This. Hence Lacy Clay etc etc. A byproduct of gerrymandered districts is the concentrated Blue districts -where a permanent Dem is hard to unseat, because voters don't turn out in primaries and they settle for the incumbent. Then the general election comes along and voters in the concentrated districts don't have much to vote for.
