Still doesn't seem like a great idea but who knows. It's going to slow down car sales a bit, and possibly the general economy

Hey man, we've been busy trying to capture an alligator in a city park all week. Give us a break.

That was an iguana. I've almost stepped on bigger gators walking my dog.

LOL. He was a cute little guy. I feel bad for Alligator Bob from the Chicago Herpetological Society who tried unsuccessfully for a week to catch it. He must have been loving all that attention. Then they bring up a ringer from Florida who catches it in like 10 hours and everyone goes nuts for him.

If the New Illinois Movement gets their way, it might be the best of Pritzker's accomplishments, though it's unlikely and it would be unintentional.

Any chance of Illinois going Missouri or Wisconsin? That rural urban upstate/Downstate gulf is vast. When the power shifts, the boilerplate ALEC plus the vendetta is something.

ALEC is losing members, the losses are in triple digits. Facebook, Amazon and Google have been out a long time. The top dog at Google when they left called funding ALEC a mistake. Comcast and AT&T are out. It's the Koch Bros and pharma and crap like that that's left, even BP is out. Bring 'em on.

The funniest thing about this is how it's framed: "Kick Chicago out of Illinois." It's basically like if Charlize Theron were at your dinner party charming everyone to death and you were like "sorry, Charlize, you're from Africa, gotta go."

If every tax dollar that was generated in the greater Chicago metropolitan area stayed in that greater metorpolitan Chicago area and didn't have to go to help build roads in Tazewell County. If every black person that this racism is directed at buying a scratchy lottery ticket no longer funded the state education of a kid from Evansville. If not one undocumented Mexican in Pilsen buying a case of Modelo saw his tax money go to people who hate him and don't want him here down in Springfield. If not one state trooper's car in Decatur gets money from corporate taxes levied on Google, Amazon, McDonald's, Hyatt, Boeing and the like. Then in a couple years "Chicago" (the city and burbs) would be a super state. If what they're talking about, dividing it at 80, happened, Chicago would have the electoral power of something in the area of GA or OH, but with the economic impact of something trailing only CA and NY. Every road would be smooth as silk. The el train cars, tracks, stations would get upgraded and so would the bus lines so people on the west and south side have better access to jobs downtown. Our schools would have more money than they know what to do with. Our air quality would be awesome. Our home values would spike, which an interactive online NY Times piece would cite as improving our quality of life, while also bumping property taxes that fund our schools and fire departments, which in turn leads to cost of living raises for our workers.

Downstate would be KS. 2.5 million people who vote like 87% Trump, they'd enact a bunch of laws that bankrupt them further, they'd have a whopping 6 electoral votes, but more power in the Senate than they deserve. The population would sink, though, as people moved to "Chicago" or another state, and they'd lose a couple Congressional seats and electoral votes over the course of a couple decades. "Chicago" would create its own state schools and UIUC and ISU and Eastern and Western would wither as urban and suburban kids went to state schools in "Chicago." There would be huge state deficits that make the current one, blamed by "Normal Americans" on Chicago look like nothing. The governor would be a Pence-like milquetoast figure of mundane fundamentalist evangelical hate. This would basically be Brexit for them. A crippling mess that they don't want, but are too stupid to realize they don't want, all because they don't like black, hispanic, LGBTQ people. That's all this is, is the Trump-era hate-fueled stupidity common in "normal Americans."

I halfway want to start commuting to meetings to support this group. They'd love my speech detailing why I'm on their side.

That whole ALEC movement is the history of Illinois in a nutshell. My ancestors moved to Lawrence County, Illinois over two hundred years ago, and were among the first settlers after Native Americans were kicked off their land. They've dealt with 200 years of crap in rural Illinois. Don't get me started on that state's history.

Missouri is completely different. 71% GOP controlled statehouse and some of the worse Trumper politicians. Dems are terrible too, Centrists like McCaskill and that clown running as a conservative dem that lost governor to Greitens. We are fooked here.

You could be Kentucky. McConnell and Paul for life. McConnell has run against some real mouth-breathers here, and the Democrats are terrible, insincere, incompetent and corrupt. McCaskill is a Rhodes Scholar compared to McConnell's challenger, Amy McGrath. John Yarmuth (the one Democrat among the state's representatives in Washington) is smart, articulate, knows policy, and is very impressive, but there's little else in the state. At least the current governor (Bevin) is so arrogant, erratic, and unpopular (regularly attacking teachers, for instance) that a Democrat has a shot to win the governor's race this fall.
