Guess Trump doesn’t actually think climate change is a Chinese hoax.

This is a really hard idea to get inside my head. Large scale resource extraction from Greenland would be the final nail in the coffin for coastal cities around the world, if we already haven't passed that point. I would hope there would be massive protests but so far none of those have been able to stop any of these kind of things (for example: DAPL). It's going to take protests the level of Puerto Rico or Hong Kong to stop things like this and even then it may not be enough.

For clarification, hydrocarbons are only a small portion of the valuable resources expected to be found in Greenland. There are abundant gemstones and precious metal deposits including uranium. Denmark is assumed to be a safe world player, but a portion of the argument to purchase control of Greenland would be to play defense.

As for hydrocarbon extraction, it wouldn't be a final nail in any fashion. Hydrocarbon resources are abundantly available in other parts of the world, can be extracted much easier, and already have plenty of global climate destructing power. Protests also won't change squat. I think both sides--left and right--need to educate themselves on the global energy market, and figure out how we are going to be able to meet the energy demands of 8+ billion people across the globe without destroying the planet in the process. The solutions are far, far more complex than curtailing fossil fuel use.

(Note: In case it is unclear, I'm not an advocate for buying Greenland. Just attempting to provide the logic behind it. In the universe of bat-guano-crazy Trump administration ideas, this one actually makes some sense.)

I'm not worried about drilling for oil in Greenland. I'm worried that all the new traffic, trucks, boats, planes, etc would accelerate the melting of Greenland, which is the largest reserve of fresh water ice outside of Antarctica.

Could be a peak into the future of geopolitics and wars.

For the record, I get why he'd propose buying Greenland. My big WTF is why do they think Denmark would sell? What country in their right mind would?

I hope Denmark comes back with something like they'll trade Greenland for Alaska and a Nevada county to be named later.

What I bet this band of criminals does is make a thinly veiled offer-they-can't-refuse and intimidate them. Not to mention that Denmark is not in the EU so the fascists no doubt think it is easier to push them around while making the EU look weak.

Here's the other thing - how is this a good negotiating tactic?

What would you think if all the sudden China's leaders said "We think buying Puerto Rico would be a good thing." "We are seriously looking into purchasing Puerto Rico." "I think $100 million would get us there."

All without a hint they'd been talking to any American.

It would sound predatory and an attempt at intimidation to me. If I am in government, I'm thinking they don't respect us at all.

I mean, right?

Yep. I am guessing some guy wearing fancy military metals impressed upon pea brain trump that climate change is causing resource shifts hence power changes etc, and Russia is up there going at their access.

pft like Mo could get that deal done. Staten Island maybe but certainly no place with good health care and low crime.
