I think this is where push comes to shove, and GRB's demographic of mostly 30+ year old white dudes ends Whitney's run.

Boo hiss. I'm not a big fan of her but to me the cover of this blows the original away. Plus there is no denying her voice is incredible.heyzeus wrote:I think this is where push comes to shove, and GRB's demographic of mostly 30+ year old white dudes ends Whitney's run.
Oh and I've been voting for guitar .... And I'm not in the aforementioned demographic. Maybe I can get some sympathy votes.

Unfortunately, the original Beatles version isn't available on youtube. Prince's solo is fantastic, but otherwise, all they did was do a very good recreation of the original, with the caveat that they needed twice as many people on guitar/bass to make it sound as good as the original.
I love Dolly, but Whitney took that song and improved it several-fold. It will be a rare singer than can perform that song as well as Whitney did.
All in all, I like Guitar better, but I think Whitney was the better cover.

Though call. Whitney's high notes vs. Prince's guitar solo.

34 year old white guy
I have voted Whitney the entire way through and it is ridiculous that she is not a clear runaway winner.
Still pissed the grunge run ends...

This is basically how I feel. The performance of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a nice, faithful rendition, but doesn't really try to do anything more than that until Prince comes in for the outro, and the all-star cast (minus Prince) adds essentially nothing to to song other than just seeing them on stage together honoring George. It's certainly well-executed, but it ends up just feeling like a pretty tame cover of a great song with a great solo added on at the end, which of course makes sense since the whole point was they were playing George's song at his induction. But I think all in all it is more impactful as a moment in time than as a standalone cover, and when I listen to it, I'm tempted to just skip the cover part of the song and go right to Prince's outro even though it's one of my favorite Beatles songs.Gashouse wrote:Unfortunately, the original Beatles version isn't available on youtube. There's no Prince solo here, but this is actually my favorite cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

I can't deny her talent, but I am not a fan. This result makes me sad.

I just blame this on tothebeach08 being more likable than me!
Seriously, Whitney's version created the longest run at #1 on Billboard at the time, even though it was quickly overtaken in that department. And while the charts certainly don't mean much in terms of this, it is a testament to just how good that was. I'd say this song was also when we probably last saw her on top of her game.
