I've always known her wrote it, but I didn't know Prince actually sang it. I thought he wrote it for Sinead O'Connor.

He wrote it for a side project, The Family, which never took off. Not sure if Sinead heard it somewhere or it got shopped to her. Prince never recorded it until after Sinead made it a hit.
