Once a fire like this gets going, is it even possible to extinguish?

We dump water on them continuously but until they start running low on fuel, we aren’t having much of an effect.

I’m taking “get going” to mean roughly that the fire has grown enough to burn through the roof. At that point, it’s about containing the fire to the burning section of the structure and, if there are things of value below, salvaging and removing them. At Cathedrale Notre Dame, the stained glass was likely a priority. Don’t know if they were able to keep them wet/cool enough to keep from losing them.

One gets the feeling this isn't going to end well. Apparently there's been a string of church vandalisms and it's believed that this was intentional.

The tunic of St. Louis (relic of the city’s namesake) has been reported as safe.

I like this picture of people on the bridges on the Seine solemnly watching the fire (spoilered for size):

I could give two [expletive] about this.

It is a symbol of one of the largest, most corrupt entities of organized religion. I wish it would have burned to the ground.

To me, it is a symbol of abuse.
