Really? I'm middle class and I don't know anyone sitting on their ass waiting for someone to give them what they need to survive. With the exception of teenaged boys.

Oh wait I lean liberal so that means I MUST be waiting for a handout! Right. Got it.

I know 3 couples specifically that have kids together & live together and will tell you point blank they won't get married because then they won't get a check. I know one couple that got divorced so they could get a check, still live together nothing else changed.

I knew I was doing something wrong. If it were raining soup, I'd bring a fork.

That wouldn't affect me in my workplace, obviously, although there are majors and departments at my university that would attract conservative students or colleagues. There are two colleagues in my department who are conservative, but in quite different ways, but few people discuss politics with me, anyway. I think I inherited my parents' circumspection about discussing politics or religion in public, unless it's a natural part of the conversation.

On the other hand, my dentist is a little suspicious of academics, and likes using drills. It was odd, too, how he once told me about an effective way to commit suicide.

I really don't, unless you are referring to my 7 year old son who wants me to buy him video games constantly without doing his chores.

When I say "I don't know anyone", I mean I don't know them personally. I hear about deadbeats on the news, sure. I occasionally see a homeless person with a cup on the side of the road, I guess.

The people I know just want a job, and are willing to work. I don't know, maybe Iowa is not like other parts of the country, but from my experience I'd guess that for every 1 person that is truly looking for free government money there are probably 100 others that are looking for a job.

Just with the %age of the population on some form of welfare it would seem very rare that you don't know anyone looking for a handout. There are many people in my hometown that have never held a job in their adult lives, I don't know how you can say they aren't looking for a handout.

In Portland, Or, they call those people 'trust fund babies'.

OK, so I still haven't been hazed, but we had a conversation this morning about politics. The right-wing guy who always brings this crap up was complaining again about some election result. When I got the chance I piped in with the new about Joni Ernst's spokesperson (more info has been added to it, it's pretty bad: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/ ... wmenu=true). The people were pretty astounded but the guy asked "Would it have chance who you had voted for?" And I said, "No, but it would have probably changed who SOME people voted for." Then there was some brief discussion wondering how they could have kept it out of the press until after the election and other stuff. Then they changed back to whining about the minimum wage increase in Illinois. This conversation is just dumb and awkward and unprofessional IMO.

I find the people who complain about politics usually have no business discussing politics.
