McNulty for instance, comes off as your typical rebellious anti-hero cop at the beginning of the first season, but you see how flawed and self-destructive he is as the seasons progress. By season 3, you lose a lot of admiration for him.

That's good to know, because McNulty so far is one of those clichés (probably the biggest). And of course, then there's Deputy Commissioner Rawls, who provides the standard foil to the rebellious anti-hero cop.

Personally , I like it better than the Sopranos, which I love but is also full of gangster cliches.

Ah, but I don't mind gangster clichés. :)

Great thread. The Wire is the best show on television by a country mile. It takes a little getting into, like half the first season just to figure out who everyone is, but the payoff is huge. I've never thought of it as a cop show, especially after season one. It is obviously, but it's so much more than that. In my opinion it's a show about America, especially urban America, and it's the most realistic portrayal of a broken down dream I've seen.

I could wax on forever about this show. It has such an amazing, diverse cast. Everyone loves Omar because he's a bad ass, but he's also like no other character that has ever been on tv. He's a bad ass gangsta with a moral code, and he only robs drug dealers. A stone cold killer but he never kills the innocent. To top it all of, he's gay, which imo is something that tough black men on TV are never allowed to be.

I love that show is about a whole segment of society that have decided to basically opt out of the official system. They've created their own world with its own economy that in so many ways is more American than "real" America.

Ghost, just wait until you've finished season 4. It's an absolute masterpiece. It returns to the awesome crime investigation with Marlow on the rise, but its heart is with the neighborhood kids. By the end you really love those kids. There are so many poignant moments. Watching the choices that some of them are forced to make is heartbreaking.

Best show on television? [-(

The Wire isn't even the best show in its genre. The Shield is superior.

First, you're wrong.

Second, The Wire is so much more than a cop show. It has no genre, unless that genre is drama in general.

TS doesn't have a particular genre either, but since TW does explore the whole gang and cop angles, it is as good a fit as anything else, making it comparable to TS. TS does a lot of the same things that TW does, only the the Strike Team is woven into it.

But, TS is better than TW. The drama they create is insanely good, and Vic Mackey is like the Spiderman of TV shows. He is the most human of any TV character I've ever watched.

I haven't watched hardly any Shield. I should give it a shot.

I can vouch for a lurking Wire fanatic who also loves The Shield.
