A few years ago when I worked in New York, we had a raccoon crawl into our primary station output step-up transformer - which pumped up the voltage from the main turbine generator from 20 kV to 345 kV before it went out to the grid. Bastard crawled around on it and started nibbling on some wiring. Tripped the whole damn reactor and caused a sitewide blackout for almost an entire day (control room switched to backup emergency power).

Is it because it's too much to wrap your head around, or do you just hate the idea of all the Michael's out there that are professional poker players while you aren't?

I love the thought of a multiverse, because in some other universe there is a wart57 married to Kate Beckinsale...

Or Mrs. Wart's hot cousin.

She is crazier than Mrs. Wart.

In some other multiverse, there is a wart57 hitting cleanup for the St. Louis Cardinals, while in this universe the cleanup hitter for the Cardinals is hitting like wart57.

How about a universe where wart57 has 4 sons?

I am sure there is one...and one where the Cubs have been good for 100+ years and the Cards have sucked....

It's tightly guarded, I went to my source and he knows about this but doesn't know what they will announce. He thinks two possibilities - 1) A new Higgs particle. The Higgs Boson (the "God Particle") might have a brother or sister, which is interesting but doesn't sound revolutionary because it's not out of the realm of possible predictions from the Standard Model. 2) A completely new particle that is not predicted by the Standard Model (SM)

My guy was explaining how physicists hate the SM because first off the calculations are extremely complex and cumbersome (i.e not elegant, to a physicists love simplicity) and second because many of the calculations need to be "normalized" because they result in infinities. Theorists hate this, because they don't understand why they need to normalize, and therefore it seems like a cheat.

Physicists would love to throw the SM on it's ear, and maybe this announcement will be that. If that's the case, then it truly could be revolutionary.

I talked to someone involved with one of the experiments, he honestly seemed surprised by the question as to when (or if) something would be released). He did say there is large conference the week of Aug 3, so maybe then.

It would be great news if this does crack open the standard model, but I won't get my hopes up yet. Most of the time, these types of announcements turn out not to be confirmed or are ultimately not as significant as hoped i.e. some minor patch-up or addition to the standard model.

Remember the observations a couple years ago from the Antarctic telescope that were supposed to be evidence of cosmic inflation, but turned out to just be dust?

Anyway, hope I'm wrong. Seems like particle physics has been at a dead end for quite a while and really needs new observations if there is to be progress in fundamental physics.

Turns out there is no new particle. It was just statistical noise.
