It's true. My older brother is a business journalist, and he worked near the World Trade Center when there was bombing there in 1993. He was sick that day and wasn't able to go in, and fortunately missed it.

I'm still surprised the death toll wasn't higher. There was no way to escape any floors above where the planes hit. It was late enough in the morning that I assume most people who work in that type of office would have been in to work already. Maybe there as a lot of luck...

Memory might be faulty but i recall in the immediate aftermath of the collapse estimates of the dead in the tens of thousands.

I’ll plug the NYer article/book about Rick Rescorla here as well. A) he predicted it and b) made sure the people at Morgan Stanley Dean Witter were prepared.
