Norman Lear Dead at 101.

Post by Joe Shlabotnik »

He had a big influence on me. Our family watched most of his shows while I was a teenager. All In The Family, Good Times, The Jeffersons, Maude.

He owned the airwaves in the 70s and we are better off for it, imo.

I always wondered how his shows differed from their British counterparts: for instance, All in the Family was based on Till Death Do Us Part, and Sanford and Son was based on Steptoe and Son (but really, as Chris Rock once said, it was the Redd Foxx Show0.

Lear was such a dominant producer in the seventies: All in the Family, Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons, Maude, Good Times, One Day at a Time--those are just the ones that come immediately to mind. He was also a promising director prior to his tv productions taking off: Cold Turkey is an underrated comedy.
