holy crap. I just found out the Bottle Rockets have a song about Slo-Tom's. I've got to make it that place now - hopefully my presence won't ruin the place. hopefully someone will kick my arse while there

Quote:
I know where we can go if we ain't got nothin to do
all we're gonna need is a ten dollar bill
maybe we better bring two
cause you never know how its gonna go,
might stay til the band gets through
that crappy little place at the end of the block
baby lets me and you
go down to Slo-Toms
lets go down to Slo-Toms
lets go down
it aint much of nothin but it sure is somethin"

the southside dutch and dogtown irish of St louis may not be compatible with frozen drinks from south of the border. aw what the hell - I say this as I drink a corona.

run it past JL. , its his thread that you're hijacking.

My current watering hole is Humphrey's Bar and Grill at the corner of Laclede and Spring. It's a typical hangout for SLU students, but I do find the place to be comfortable and after a few drinks everybody feels like family. Plus my parents watched the final episode of MASH there when they were dating, so it holds some meaning to me.

Humps has its own wikipedia article. (It's a status symbol)

I'll cover a few in my territory:
Cousin Hugos -A good old school bar and grill in Maplewood. Laid back and local. Cheap cheap food that is pretty good.
smokers welcome. (but its not unbearable if you don't)

Ha. I've probably driven by that place a thousand times. Never went in though. Maybe I'll rectify that next time home.

I'm not sure if it's even still open, but the Fox and Hound at Clayton and Skinker is pretty cool. Quite different than any other bar in the StL area. Very old English hunting lodge feel.

Harry's is pretty much the only bar where I just 100% refuse to go, and that includes both the Southwest location, and the downtown location.

Riley's is pretty good. I know a handful of the regulars there, and it's sufficiently smoky and dirty. The owner is a pretty cool guy.

Barney's is a really great place to hang out with dudes wearing "I Heart Hot Moms" shirts and partially tilted trucker hats.

haltz's comments about Friendly's are spot-on. I like that place a lot... as long as it's not peak hours. But that probably applies to any bar.

The Mack down on Macklind Ave is a pretty cool bar with a decent menu and some good bucket prices.

STL Sports Zone is like a holding pen for fat guys trying to get away from their wife and kids.

Lemmons used to be much better but they gradually started hiring d'bags to work the bar. Plus, you have to put up with [expletive] local bands on the weekends. If you like [expletive] local music, maybe it's the place for you. Other than those gripes, it's actually a good bar, and I've heard that some of the d'bags behind the bar have been jettisoned.

Mangia is a 3:00 bar down on Grand. I'm not a fan of that place at all. It's always stupidly packed and full of hipster douchebags. And it looks cleaner than it's supposed to.

The Tin Can is pretty cool. The gimmick- only beer in cans- is kind of annoying, but I still like the place. The crowd seems to be pretty laid back.

Three Monkeys isn't really my kind of bar but I know some of the staff over there and they're good people. Plus, they open at 7 or something on Saturday and Sunday morning. So, if you're looking to get obliterated on a Saturday morning, that's the place to go.

I'm a fan of Stella Blues. I just wish it was a little bigger.

The Black Thorn gets a huge thumbs up. They're understaffed, so I'd recommend either heading to the upstairs bar (only open on Friday and Saturday after 7) or just avoiding peak hours. They've got great music, the staff is cool, and they have great pizza.

Double D's is a total [expletive]. And that's a good thing. It's the home of $1 jello shots and something called "monkey sex". The shots they serve there are huge, and the beer is cheap.

O'Connell's is actually a pretty cool place to get drunk, but it gets pricy. There's something to like about getting bombed with the image of Michael Collins staring down upon you. The food's amazing there, albeit it's on a limited menu.
