Songs that haven't aged well

Post by heyzeus »

Consider this an offshoot of the "revisiting albums from your youth" threads.

What we're looking for here is songs that, when they were released, were trying to be edgy or provocative, or maybe were just ok given the social values of the time, but in hindsight are just bad and wrong today.

First up, a band I love, the Replacements!

She don't wear no pants and she don't wear no tie
Always on the ball, she's always on strike
Struttin' up the aisle, big deal, you get to fly
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
Paid my fare, don't want to complain
You get to me, you're always outta champagne
Treat me like a bum, don't wear no tie
'Cause you ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky, oh hoh
And the sign says, "Thank you very much for not smoking"
My own sign says, "I'm sorry, I'm smokin'"
Don't treat me special or don't kiss my ass
Treat me like the way they treat 'em up in first class
Sanitation expert and a maintenance engineer
Garbage man, a janitor and you my dear
A real union flight attendant, my oh my
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky

This is a song that didn't chart, but I remembering hearing it on Friday Night Videos or some such show and liking it, and never heard it played again, but I always remembered the band and the song.

Talk about a song that hasn't aged well: power-pop cliches about an [expletive] who dumps one woman for another, than tells his current squeeze that he's going to dump her and take his old girlfriend back by force.

Geez Louise.

I have no way of knowing how this song has actually aged, because I'm not old enough to know how it was received when it came out. But holy cow - every time I hear it, I cringe. I happen to think the Beatles are the greatest band of all time, but man does John lay the stalker/creep persona on thick with this one. Just the opening line along..."Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl, than to be with another man..."

The Beatles worst. On an otherwise great Rubber Soul, the final song should have been left off.

Ten Years After's "I'd Love To Change the World" - have no idea how this dodged controversy then or especially when Jetta's cover was released in 2015.

Sweet Home Alabama.

Neil Young was right.

I used to like Ted Nugent once upon a time. But songs like Jailbait don't age well regardless of him being a Trump and gun loving [expletive].

Never liked Van Hagar's Higher and That's What Dreams are made of, but they are even worse now.

There is a ton of interesting discussion about Sweet Home Alabama. The Young vs. Skynyrd stuff is fun. Neil Young doesn't like his song Alabama in hindsight and says Skynyrd was right to rebut. The Watergate line is ambiguous. But the song is definitely anti-Wallace and segregation. It's also jammed and tailgated for the wrong points of pride.

Is it true that the ‘feud’ was all in good fun, and that Ronnie Van Zant was actually buried in a Neil Young shirt? Pretty sure I read that somewhere.
