You don't need an HD branded antenna for HD content. It's the same stuff, rabbit ears will do.

This. Any antenna will work (provided you can hook it up to your tv)

Ended up going with the Samsung 51 inch plasma smart tv and this thing is awesome.

There was hardly any difficult set up required. The only thing i struggled with was putting the stand together and setting it up on my entertainment center because I had no one to help me.

After getting it up on the entertainment center, flipped it on, and went to adjust my settings. No problem at all. Everything was relatively easy. It had all kinds of apps already installed, including MLB.tv and netflix--the only two i really care about.

The only things i've had problems with thus far are that it has asked me for my wifi password a few times after each time i turned the tv on. Although it didn't today, so hopefully the password has "stuck". Also, I'm concerned about the glare--the stand that comes with the tv does swivel, and after giving it a test run today with all the blinds open, it's not THAT bad. There is still a a little bit of a glare though. One cool thing this tv does is automatically detect the amount of light in the room so it will adjust accordingly.

All in all, I'm happy about my purchase. This thing is awesome.

Very nice!! Anytime you have windows behind you there's going to be a glare issue. I'm don't remember which it is but I think the LCD's handle glare better than plasmas but you'll find the colors are much better & more true w/ a plasma

Where I live in Az, you need the HD antenna, rabbit ears do not work, someimes the HD antenna didn't work. Where I lived growing up in Edwardsville, rabbit ears rarely worked. Just trying to be helpeful.

You don't need an "HD" antenna...you just need an antenna with more gain. Get a nice log-periodic antenna, point it to the tower, and you should be set.

That's why I have Derect TV, so I don't have to have a [expletive] antenna, HD or otherwise.

Just a big satellite dish?

And karp is correct in that LCDs tend to have less glare versus a plasma, but plasmas have a much better quality picture. I got the best of both worlds in my Panasonic Viera plasma, which has a matte glass screen - so it actually has less glare than most LCDs, but retains the picture quality of a plasma.

So i'm in the market for a new TV. I'm thinking about a 55" Samsung LED like this one:

Anyone have any recommendations?

We have one now. LED with Uverse HD. Here was our research - go to Target, look at the ones on the wall. Ask a few questions. Buy. 15 minutes. I had read here and heard different conversations about what is best for low light, sports, movies...but didn't pay much attention.

About old movies on this TV. I wasn't expecting such a difference, considering the technology in which the movies were filmed is unchanged. A google search on this topic, and I see people have been complaining about this for a while - and notice the same thing I do - "soap opera effect". Apparantly from the backlighting. That crispness takes something away from the technicolor.

I think we'll like it for sports. In fact, -they don't design the graphics for score/time etc in sporting events to be readable on non-HDTVs. Over T-Giving 3 of us were trying to look at the picture to figure out time left on a football game (about a 31 in 10 year old TV) and drew 3 different conclusions. I had to check on my phone to figure it out.

That room gets a lot of southern light, and I don't like to pull the blinds much - so the backlighting will help. Still have the old behemoth to watch movies in the basement.

Looks like we'll be in the market soon. Our 2007 Panasonic 42" plasma has a pink bar down the middle of the screen. I'm going to call them to see if it's fixable, but from what I've googled it probably needs a new board of some sort.

With today's prices, I can't see repairing over replacing.

After a few weeks I didn't even notice the glare anymore. The tv autoadjusts to its surroundings as well, so that's a big help. While there is a slight glare, it's not enough to annoy me (and I get annoyed easily).

All in all, no regrets at all. The price was right for a big screen, so I almost HAD to buy it. 'Merica.
