My ex-gf grew up in Chelmsford, MA and one of the artists that worked with Groening is from there as well. She pointed out a bunch of buildings in her town that the guy used as inspiration for his artwork, such as the elementary school, and they looked spot on.

Springfield is more of an idea than an actual location. I doubt Groening ever intended to replicate the Simpson's home town off an actual location.

Along these lines, South Park supposedly refers to south Park County in Colorado - towns of Alma and Fairplay are there -its about 45min drive south of Breckenridge CO. I've been thru the towns way more than I've seen the show - so no idea if they correlate at all.
