I don't think that's what they do. They record data, not transmit location from what I understand.trill wrote:That's what he's saying. Re: Malaysia Airlines flight missing
a quick skim of wiki says it should be doing this
They are designed to emit an underwater locator beacon for up to 30 days and can operate immersed to a depth of up to 6,000 meters (20,000 ft)

Re: Malaysia Airlines flight missing
I read last night that it traveled, off course, over an hour after all communications and the transponder were cut off.
As for the black box, I don't understand why they can't find that either.
Add in the possibility of a meteor hitting it now. The list is growing.

Apparently the black box beacon only has a range of 5 miles or so and is only detectable by sonar. It's pinging, not transmitting.

Which is mind blowing, really. You'd think they'd have something capable of being picked up by a radar or radio or something. With their underwater pings audible to sonar detectors only within a few miles, and the possibility that the recorders may be thousands of feet below the water’s surface, tracking down a black box on an ocean bottom can be a daunting challenge.
“It certainly depends on the location,” Sarah McComb, chief of the recorders division at the National Transportation Safety Board, said Tuesday. “I don’t think the range is quite five to 10 miles, but there are a lot of different factors involved. It also can be compromised if it’s buried in silt or sand.”

I also can't believe there havent been any facebook/twitter status updates via passengers. It's safe to assume that this plane has in-flight wifi right?

Not if it was turned off. Or if the plane just exploded/imploded/fell apart.go birds wrote:I also can't believe there havent been any facebook/twitter status updates via passengers. It's safe to assume that this plane has in-flight wifi right?
