What are your 2017 goals?

Well now that we've found out if 2016 was good, bad, or meh for you, what do you want out of 2017?

It's going to be a weird year for me. Farm prices suck and land prices are high so it's a sit still year at the farm. If expansion opportunities happened I'd have to look at them but I don't see a situation where the math works this year. In fact I could see some contraction happening.

In my side business I have to figure out if I'm going to be a retailer or a distributor. I'm still evaluating that but I'm leaning towards distributor. Especially if I can land another licensing deal and if retailers keep coming to me to do design of their products.

I've really fallen for this girl. I don't know what happens next.

I need to make room for a new project car. That means one car has to go, but which car.....

Anyway, GRBers I hope your 2017 is great. What does it have in store for you?

I don't know. I wish I knew. I can't make money in the current farm economy. So I've got a lot of decisions to make. I'd like to find some kind of side job that would allow me to continue farming but making money on the side. We have a five year goal of building a home on our farm, 2017 can go along way toward making that a reality.

I need to get back to enjoying life more. Hectic life's and financial problems have led to us quitting a lot of hobbies and activities that I enjoyed. I don't know how but life has to become more enjoyable.

2017 Resolutions:
1. Annual goal of dropping 20 lbs*
2. Play every board game in my collection and decide whether it is worth keeping or selling (I own about 180 board games, many of which take 2-3 hours to play, so it's actually quite a large and ambitious feat to accomplish)
3. Decide whether or not my idea for a side business that I started last year but did literally nothing on besides creating the DBA and buying the website rights is actually viable and worth renewing
4. Not travel all across the country a half-dozen times to attend various weddings for friends/family
5. Fly First Class overseas somewhere with Mrs. Swirls (current top three is Machu Picchu, Aruba, and Hawai'i... In that order)

#5 should help with #1, especially if we decide on Machu Picchu since it would include a five day backpacking trip through the mountains of Peru along the Inca Trail from Cusco to Machu Picchu. I have not done an overnight backpacking trip for over a decade, so we will need to do a few weekend hikes this summer to get practice.

Pretty sure there are more than that on my list that the wife and I made a couple days ago. I'll look when I get back home tonight.

Scrimp and save enough to take a trip to Iowa (yes Iowa) to a music fest and to buy a nice ring (more than the $350 wedding ring I bought) for our 25th anniversary. Yes, that's right. Someone put up with Ol' Leroy for a quarter century.

:cm:

Other than that, nut much.

1. Be able to jog again. I've had Achilles tendonitits for months. Physical therapy has finally gotten me to the point where I can walk, bike and do the elliptical without pain, but there is still pain when I test running on it. I'm nervous I'll re-injure it, so I stop after a short distance.
2. Eat healthier. I want to lose weight but that's an outcome of eating better.
3. Double the profit of my side business.
4. Go to bed no later than 11PM on work nights. More sleep also helps lose weight.

Best of luck to you. I'm pretty worried about the farm economy right now. There doesn't seem to be an improvement in sight. A lot of the equipment dealers, and even fertilizer and seed dealers are laying off here. It's pretty scary. I'm afraid there is a big crash coming. Land prices just don't seem to be stopping here, some next to us just sold for 16k an acre. The landlords seem to keep wanting to jack up cash rent even though commodity prices are terrible and some of the custom farm work I do the owners are trying to get me to cut prices because they say they aren't making any money. I can definitely see a scenario where we are farming less ground in a year or two.

Is that true? I'm a maybe 6 hour a night sleeper. Maybe I need to rethink that.

Typical annual goals of reading and exercising more, and eating and drinking less. In 2016 I lost over 20 pounds and was basically at my goal weight. I fell back into eating and drinking habits and gained about half the weight back.

Otherwise:
1) Move to a different house - We moved to the burbs in 2015 but I think it was a mistake. I think my whole family will be happier if we move.
2) Run a half marathon trail race - I ran my first trail race and first race in over 10 years last year.

1.) Finish my workshop. So that I can actually enjoy building stuff again, rather than trying to make it work in an incredibly unorganized, half-finished space.
2.) Stop phubbing. Both at work and at home.
3.) Stop getting annoyed at contrived buzzwords like phubbing and mansplaining. Succumb to the will of the people to use these terms.
4.) 100 pushups every day. (OK, most days.)
5.) Less weekday drinking. I typically drink 1-2 beers every night, then 4-6 each weekend day+night (including Fridays). That's a lot of extra calories and expense I could cut.
6.) Less unproductive time-wasting, like playing on the phone/iPad and watching Netflix. More productive time-wasting, like reading for learning and pleasure.
7.) Don't die. In World War III or otherwise.
8.) Finally organize a monthly poker game amongst friends. Something I've planned to do for the last 3 years, but keep putting off.
9.) Go to the doctor. Again, something I need to do but keep putting off. I'm probably not as healthy as I should be.

Almost as long as you've been at GRB.
