Between running Grantland into the ground and the stupidity that is ESPN Insider, they've missed out on a lot of web traffic from me in the last several years.

Their home page just seems like one missed opportunity after another to monetize the site. I saw one ad when I just checked it. I wouldn't want it cluttered with them, but it seems you could get more than one without people being bothered.

In hindsight, the Steve Phillips/Brooke Hundley firings were the first tremors of the earthquake.
I'm proud for having brought this masterpiece to GRB (not that I made it, of course).

Linda Cohn thinks politics played a role in the firings.

I think it's because the cost of natural gas was far cheaper than the cost of mining and burning Chris Berman's jokey athlete names. Despite the expensive deployment of smokestack scrubbers on ESPN's broadcast towers, Berman's jokes still polluted the atmosphere, quadrupled the number of black-lung cases in Bristol, Connecticut, led to the rain of sulfuric acid up and down the East Coast, and were responsible for the gradual death of the Great Barrier Reef and the likely collapse of an ice shelf in Antarctica by 2020.

"You're right. That is definitely a percentage of it. I don’t know how big a percentage.
Probably something around zero.
ESPN management overpaid for sports TV rights, she said, and didn't fully anticipate how many subscribers it would lose from cord-cutting and the rise of internet TV services such as Netflix.

Sad day. They are just hollowing out all non-NFL writers and personalities. I think Dilfer remains the only big name laid off on that end.

There's been chatter that they might be bringing over Adrian Wojnarowski and his sub-site The Vertical from Yahoo, and that's why they dumped a good chunk of their NBA writers.
