For me they would include -recreation opportunities, geography/location, diversity, beer (and the herb) regs, asshat factor.

On geography/location, I like central locale -for ease of travel elsewhere. However, if state has critical mass of all the other good stuff -I could tolerate a less central locale. Like Oregon has critical mass to make me move non-central.

Utah would be great, but draconian liquor laws, falls short on diversity..and....some other weirdness.

Oregon. Not very diverse, but no sales tax and lots of happy.

I like NC quite a bit, for a southern state- even with the GOP authoritarian asshattery. Always been intriqued by MI for a summer residence.

Gaping holes in my East Coast state experience.

Texas. Never. Sorry Zeus we can't open Busy Bee TX together.

I’ve compiled a similar list: Top Places For My Daughter To Go To College (Based On Stuff I Like)

1. Madison, Wi
2. Chapel Hill, NC
3. D.C.
4. Charlottesville
5. Nashville
6. Twin Cities

7. CoMo

8. Indianapolis

9. St Louis

Legal rec marijuana is a leading indicator for a state I would like. Not even sure how much I'd choose to partake. But several positive things go in concert with this - smart open-minded people (to support this legalization), good government. Live and let live. Good for a state's economy. I also sense it involves nature appreciation as in ya know like the [expletive] woods man!
