SPOILER ALERT: Snape's more interesting than Saruman, Voldemort more than Sauron. The slow dawning that Harry is a horcrux was cool. The well-drawn scene of Priori Incantatem blew me away like no epic Middle Earth battle scene. Elvish poetry bores me.

Don't get me wrong, there were HUGE plot holes and large doses of deux ex machina in the Potter series but for me it was more enjoyable with a better payoff at the end.

I never “got” either series. Didn’t get the fanatics. The first Harry Potter movie is pretty magical but LOTR is much more consistent and ended really strong.

LOTR.

I posted this because of a heated, and I mean heated, debate on this subject between two of my nephews. And honestly after thinking on it...I have trouble choosing one over the other so obviously I post here so GRB can help make up my mind.

is the comparison between their respective universes (books, movies, lore, etc) or strictly movies or strictly books?

regardless, i've never seen or read harry potters. i've seen the lotr movies a billion times (own them) and do still enjoy them and have some familiarity of the books/lore so i chose lotr (though i haven't seen the hobbit trilogy).

The Harry Potter books are much better. LOTR movies are much better.

Its like comparing baseball players of different eras. HP is pretty amazing (though with some issues), but LOTR influenced the entire genre.

I won't pick a side. Deal with it.

The correct answer is Doctor Who.
