Yo Bottenfield's uncle, with side job at one of the green cross places.

Or better yet, get work at one of the colleges and give my daughter a kickin aid/scholarship package so we can afford it.

Actually, I don't have advice for single working person. But seems there has to be a way to hack into it Joce, if its what yoo want.

Anyways, not going to try to sell you bootstrap mythology.
Only thoughts....I would like to own a small place somewhere like OR, but rent it out VRBO AirBnB style -and just live in a van while its rented. When semi-retired, just roam around this way, but still have the base.

Very Early stage negotiations with my wife are kind of fun. Our budget #s and roaming lifestyle expectations are still far apart.

one difficulty i've come across, with state schools, is you typically have to be a resident to get them (at least what i'm qualified for). i'm not the type to just get and move without something there. i should start looking again. i also find the job application process for schools to be awful too and they never get back with you, one way or the other. that's not true. i'm remdined, i got a call i was getting an interview for a school in denver (MSU denver). i called back a few times and didn't get an answer. then at 8:30pm i get a call to say i wasn't supposed to get a call and i wasn't selected for an interview. that sucked.

It's awful. Fires in the summer that choke you, earnest hipsters in your face about it, and the dumbasses won't let you pump your own gas!

Y'all stay away. Trust me, you will HATE this god-forsaken place. HATE, HATE, HATE. You are much better off where you are. Just stay there.

After I watched that Netflix doc about the cult last year, I looked into Antelope, Oregon real estate because it looked really beautiful and it was super cheap. You can get a beach front lot in Ocean Shores, WA for like 10 grand but you'll die in a tsunami if the earthquake ever happens.
I'd really love to hang out with John Silvertooth.

The beauty of Portland is it's proximity to the mountain, the beach and the gorge. But if you actually want to live in those places and not drive your Subaru (you'll have to get a Subaru, btw) out there, it's not really that expensive if you avoid the yuppie enclaves. Different kind of Oregonian out there: not Fred Armisens doing their Peter Pan [expletive].

Olympia has some higher ed and is cheaper than Seattle. I really like Idaho, which I guess is technically PNW. Some higher ed in Coeur d'Alene, which is idyllic as f.

Couer d'Alene has that beautiful lake but isn't it polluted AF?

There are some mercury issues that my sister told me about while pulling her 3 year old's sandy hands out of her mouth when I was there last summer. Doesn't seem to stop people from swimming and boating.

I know you live out that way, know more than me, but going usr you as excuse to give my take anyway.
I love the coast there, only been in Sept and Oct, so it was pretty wide open people-wise. I could hang there, not drink/smoke and be quite content. But something about drinking/eating smoking or participating in whatever the local fare is kind of spiritual -especially there.

If I bought real estate or rented long-term around there, I might go Rockaway Beach OR. Development wise-It is old school tourist retiree with some sketchy motels etc. Town goes up the hill and has great vistas abd bones, and driveable to more hip locales.

There's place called Kelly's Brighton Marina that may be one of happiest places on Earth. On Nenhalem bay-smells fishy, looks run down from the road., but great place for crabbing from the docks or boat.. A couple runs it, and they just love life.

We were getting a camping spot there and the crazy dude that runs it told us to just pay in the AM because he was too jazzed about the sunset.
You're leading and following my family all over the Oregon Coast. My family has rented a house in Rockaway the first two weeks of August since before I was born. My son buys cheap toys at Flamingo Jim's just like I did. But I'm actually trying to get away from Rockaway, not because I don't love it, just to see more of the coast. Pacific City is my favorite right now. There's a brewery there too. And a campground with wild domestic bunnies hopping all over the place.
