101 ESPN Fired Kevin Wheeler

Post by Cronos »

I know I rarely post in this subforum (and this site) much anymore, but I was very dismayed to hear that STL local sports radio 101.1 has let Kevin Wheeler go.

I like most of their content and listen to it all the time and will continue to do so, but that sucks. He was easily the funniest and most informative personality they had.

Is anyone else going to miss him? I hope he ends up on 550 or something still local.

I did like him, but I like Stalter too. And Rivers is good along with him. I loved Duncan along with Stalter though. I don't think I'll ever like Rivers as much as I did Duncan, but maybe that's not a fair comparison.

Also, I haven't heard Michelle Smallmon since the big shake up. Where is SHE??? Bernie is starting to shout more again without here there, and that gets annoying FAST.

101 ESPN 101.1 WXOS St. LouisHubbard Broadcasting Sports “101 ESPN” WXOS East St. Louis has restructured its weekday schedule.

Anthony Stalter’s “The Turn” is moving from 1-3pm to 10am-2pm, while “The Fast Lane” hosted by Randy Karraker, Brad Thompson and Chris Rongey moves up from 2-6pm. Morning co-host Michelle Smallmon will leave the Bernie Miklasz morning show to focus on her duties as editor of 101ESPN.com while serving as a fill-in host on multiple shows at the station. 10am-1pm host Kevin Wheeler exits with the changes.
Answered my own question.

This sucks. She kept Bernie from going into his faux outrage rants. Those are fuking annoying.

I thought Smallmon was terrible. Bernie’s Ed McMahon.

I didn't think she was the best, but he toned down his faux outrage stick with her there, and that made the show tolerable. With him ramping that schtick back up, I may start listening to NPR again on my drive in. And that may make me suicidal. LOL

Yeah, I've been turning Bernie off for NPR, silence or audiobooks lately, and never really thought of why. This makes sense.

I stopped listening to Bernie a while ago even though I used to really like reading and hearing him. He's sort of taking the Kevin Slaten approach these days, just being bombastic for the sake of getting attention. Sad.

Wheels is making an appearance at a St. Charles library on October 15th that I'll be attending, basically a talk about what it's like to be a sports radio broadcaster. Free, but you have to register.
