It's honestly mind boggling we were discussing anything other than this. I mean, an immediately [expletive] carbon cycle, shorterm disruption to the food production, and who knows how many immediately killed, yet nary a word about the asteroid missing earth by less than twice its circumference.

We're so ill-prepared for anything like this. [expletive] they didn't even know about this one until it was passed. The excuse about it being because of the sun is ....seemingly not factual.

Quote:
Scientists revealed an asteroid dubbed by some as a "city killer" came closer to the Earth than the moon this week. The Washington Post reported scientists say they had no idea it was coming.

Asteroid 2019 OK came hurtling toward Earth at a speed of nearly 15 miles a second, before flying past. According to NASA, it was about 45,000 miles from Earth on Thursday.

"It would have hit with over 30 times the energy of the atomic blast at Hiroshima," astronomer professor Alan Duffy told the Sydney Morning Herald. Duffy called the zooming space rock a "city killer".

This is one of those things that it so scary I just ignore it. I hope if it happens it hits my house because I don't want to live in an apacolyptic wasteland.

If we don't know it's coming in advance, how are we supposed to send Bruce Willis out there to dynamite it into small bits?

I said this exact same thing to a couple of my friends over the weekend.

To me it makes sense that we should be focused on things we can do something about instead of astroids.

Its my understanding that the Space Force was created to prevent asteroids.

Feel like it's premature to say we can't do anything about asteroids.

Granted, we're not stopping one the size of the moon or something, but the ones that are only 500' or so....I think there's plenty of reason to be optimistic about altering their trajectory.

I just had the scariest thought. What if there is an extinction level asteroid headed towards earth and Trump knows about it, so he created the space force to stop it, but the freaking trump administration is in charge of keeping the human race from going extinct.
